“Barbie” Director Greta Gerwig Says 'Of Course I Wanted' Margot Robbie to Get Best Actress Oscar Nomination

“But I’m just happy we all get to be there together," Greta Gerwig says of her hit movie 'Barbie' and the film's eight Academy Award nominations

Greta Gerwig is sharing her reaction to Barbie's Oscar nominations.

Barbie received eight nominations for the Oscars on Jan. 23, but Gerwig, 40, and the film's star Margot Robbie notably missed the five-nominee cut for Best Director and Best Actress, respectively. While speaking with Time for its Women of the Year issue, the filmmaker addressed this year's nominations, saying, “Of course I wanted it for Margot."

“But I’m just happy we all get to be there together," Gerwig shared of the upcoming ceremony.

The outlet noted that Gerwig pointed out that she herself is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay along with her husband Noah Baumbach, whom she cowrote the movie with. Robbie, too, is nominated for Best Picture as a co-producer of Barbie alongside her husband Tom Ackerley and their co-producers David Heyman and Robbie Brenner.

“A friend’s mom said to me, ‘I can’t believe you didn’t get nominated,’” Gerwig told Time. “I said, ‘But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.’ She was like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful for you!’ I was like, ‘I know!’ ”

The nominees for Best Director at the upcoming 96th Oscars are Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall), Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest).

In the Best Actress category are Annette Bening (Nyad), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Carey Mulligan (Maestro) and Emma Stone (Poor Things).

Robbie, 33, offered a response to the Oscar nominations at a special Screen Actors Guild screening of Barbie on Jan. 31. "There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed," she said at the event, according to Deadline, adding that she feels "beyond ecstatic" the movie received eight nominations.

"Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films," she said, per the outlet.

Both women have received public displays of support from other Barbie nominees Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera since Oscar nominations were announced. "Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made history and raised the bar with Barbie," Ferrera, 39, told PEOPLE in a statement. "The cultural and industry impact they’ve achieved will be felt for generations and I’m so thankful to them for asking me to be a part of it."

Gosling, who plays Ken to Robbie's Barbie in the Barbie movie, said "there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film," in a statement shared with PEOPLE. "No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius."

"To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement," Gosling added in his statement, before sharing that he is "so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air live on Sunday, March 10, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
