Barcelona vs Chelsea LIVE!

Chelsea suffered Women’s Champions League semi-final heartbreak despite a spirited second-leg draw against Barcelona at the Camp Nou. The Blues became the first team not to lose to Barca away from home in any competition for more than four years and some 80 matches as the result of Guro Reiten’s second-half effort, which came just four minutes after Caroline Graham Hansen had struck again with her second goal of the tie.

Barcelona - with Ballon d’Or holder Alexia Putellas back fit after injury - are through to their fourth Champions League final since 2019 and third in a row, hoping to earn back the trophy they claimed for the first time against Chelsea in 2021 after last year’s defeat by Lyon in Turin. They will face either Arsenal or Wolfsburg in Eindhoven on June 3, with the second last-four tie finely poised ahead of Monday’s decider after a 2-2 draw in Germany last weekend.

Chelsea can still claim a domestic double this season, well situated in a thrilling four-way WSL title race and through to the FA Cup final, where they will face Manchester United at Wembley next month. Follow Barcelona vs Chelsea reaction live below!

Jubilant scenes at the Camp Nou as Barcelona’s euphoric players celebrate with fans.

Chelsea’s stars are crestfallen, but Emma Hayes is keeping their spirits up in a post-match huddle.

It’s worth pointing out that Chelsea are the first side to even draw against Barcelona away for over FOUR years and some 80 games.

That is some achievement in itself.

Barcelona 1-1 Chelsea (2-1 agg)

Barcelona are through to the Champions League final for the third successive season and the fourth time since 2019.

They will face either Arsenal or Wolfsburg in Eindhoven on June 3 in a bid to win back the crown they lost to Lyon in Turin last term.

But Chelsea can hold their heads up very high. It was a superb effort late on - not many teams come here and avoid defeat.

Pretty much none, in fact.

19:40 , George Flood

94 mins: Drama at both ends so late in added time but it’s not going to happen for Chelsea unfortunately, despite such a spirited effort.

There will also be no injury return for Alexia Putellas tonight after all.

19:37 , George Flood

90 mins: FOUR minutes of added time for Chelsea to find the goal to keep their Champions League dreams alive.

Can they do it?

19:37 , George Flood

89 mins: A yellow card for Cuthbert as she tries to get the ball off Barca boss Giraldez and get Chelsea moving again from a throw-in.

19:34 , George Flood

87 mins: That’s an excellent low stop from Berger to deny Paralluelo and keep Chelsea’s hopes alive with time slipping away.

The Spaniard had been perfectly teed up by fellow substitute Geyse.

19:33 , George Flood

85 mins: Geyse is now on for Bonmati, by the way.

19:33 , George Flood

A superb crowd of 72,262 fans inside the Camp Nou tonight.

Brilliant to see for such a big game.

19:31 , George Flood

84 mins: Chelsea threaten the tie-levelling goal again after more good work from Kerr.

But that’s a dreadful effort from James, who blazes a shot over the crossbar.

“One more chance,” bellows Emma Hayes from the touchline as she roars her team on.

19:28 , George Flood

81 mins: Emma Hayes is understandably going for it now in search of the goal that would force extra-time.

Right-back Perisset is replaced by Swedish midfielder Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.

Bonmati is now off receiving treatment for a knock. Geyse is waiting to come on for Barca.

19:26 , George Flood

80 mins: End-to-end stuff entering the final 10 minutes at the Camp Nou as Carter makes a vital intervention inside the Chelsea box.

At the other end, Cuthbert gets away from Patri before rifling a powerful effort that is well held by Barca ‘keeper Panos.

19:24 , George Flood

77 mins: Chelsea have some more defending to do now as they scramble clear a corner.

The fleet-footed Bonmati is still picking up far too much space through the middle.

19:22 , George Flood

75 mins: Lauren James and Pernille Harder are both coming on for Chelsea as they chase the goal that would put them ahead on the night and level in this semi-final tie.

Surprised to see goalscorer Reiten head off. Fleming also makes way.

19:21 , George Flood

73 mins: Chelsea are far more lively now and the dangerous Kerr almost picks out Reiten in the middle with an enticing cross.

Barca have definitely lost an element of midfield control since taking off England’s Keira Walsh. They look more open.

19:19 , George Flood

70 mins: Barcelona have responded to that equaliser by sending on Crnogorcevic in place of Marta.

Chelsea suddenly have a spring in their step! They couldn’t, could they?!

GOAL! Barcelona 1-1 Chelsea (2-1 agg) | Guro Reiten 67'

19:13 , George Flood

67 mins: It’s not over yet!

Chelsea are quickly back level in this second leg after Kerr is initially denied by Panos following a ball over the top from Leupolz and Reiten emphatically drives home the rebound.

Barcelona are furious as they felt there was a clear foul from Cuthbert on Mariona earlier on.

GOAL! Barcelona 1-0 Chelsea (2-0 agg) | Caroline Graham Hansen 64'

19:09 , George Flood

64 mins: A dagger blow for Chelsea as Bonmati charges forward following an exquisite touch from Mariona and plays in Hansen, who fires coolly past the on-rushing Berger with Carter unable to make the goal-line clearance.

Her second goal of the tie. And that could well be that as Barcelona close in on their third straight Champions League final.

19:08 , George Flood

61 mins: Chelsea are caught napping at the back after incisive play from Hansen and Mjelde is caught out by Mariona, with Leupolz around on the cover.

Chelsea break and fire a good ball for Kerr to chase into the left channel, with the Australian knocking back inside for Reiten, who can’t get a shot away as Marta stands her ground impressively.

19:06 , George Flood

58 mins: Chelsea take far too long over a corner and Barca are about to introduce a couple of subs before the hour mark.

Oshoala is replaced by Paralluelo up front and Engen comes on for Lioness Walsh in midfield.

19:02 , George Flood

56 mins: A sliding Charles fails to cut out Mariona’s switched ball for Hansen, who cuts inside and drifts horizontally across the box.

She wants to shoot but is brilliantly delayed by the likes of Mjelde and Perisset, eventually tussling on the edge of the area and drilling an effort well off target.

Excellent defending from Chelsea again.

19:00 , George Flood

54 mins: A bit of a lull in the game now as Carter gives the ball away for Chelsea but Barcelona can’t turn it into a chance.

Plenty of substitutes are warming up down the touchline, including Pernille Harder for Chelsea.

18:58 , George Flood

50 mins: Kerr and Reiten link up well around the Barca box, with the Norwegian going down under pressure from Marta.

No shouts for a penalty, however.

18:55 , George Flood

48 mins: A let-off for Carter, who lets Patri’s through ball for Oshoala drift right under her foot.

The Nigerian forward collects and tries to shoot, but it’s excellent covering by Mjelde to see off the danger.

The offside flag was up against Oshoala anyway. That looked very tight indeed.

18:53 , George Flood

48 mins: Barcelona are looking very dangerous at the start of this second half.

Bonmati has too much space and drives forward before having the ball blasted at her hand from point-blank range by Mjelde.

They quickly come again and Rolfo charges into space before pulling a shot wide.

18:51 , George Flood

The players have re-emerged from the Camp Nou tunnel and we are back underway!

No changes from either Emma Hayes or Barcelona counterpart Jonatan Giraldez at the interval.

18:47 , George Flood

18:42 , George Flood

Barcelona dominant as you would expect throughout that first half, but they’ve mostly been limited to half-chances by a dogged defensive effort.

Chelsea are not offering much going forward but are still in this semi-final tie...

Half-time

18:37 , George Flood

Barcelona 0-0 Chelsea (1-0 agg)

18:36 , George Flood

48 mins: Charles’ mistimed sliding challenge on Hansen gives Barca another chance with the last kick of the first half.

It’s a wicked delivery from centre-back Mapi Leon that just evades the outstretched leg of Paredes and flies wide.

Chelsea breathe a huge sigh of relief as the whistle sounds.

18:35 , George Flood

46 mins: Another nice break from Chelsea involving Kerr results in Fleming blasting over from distance.

I think the offside flag was up again anyway, but nevertheless it’s more promising stuff from the visitors.

18:33 , George Flood

45 mins: We will have three minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

18:32 , George Flood

43 mins: Better football from Chelsea as a lofted ball from the right flank is played down neatly, but the offside flag is up to swiftly thwart any attacking ambitions.

18:31 , George Flood

41 mins: Oshoala is getting frustrated as she barges over Mjelde and gives away a needless free-kick.

As comfortable as they are on the ball still, Barca have stepped off the gas over the last 10 minutes or so.

No shots on target from either side yet, with Chelsea defending doggedly for the most part.

18:28 , George Flood

39 mins: A rare foray forward from Chelsea, with Reiten stretching the Barcelona defence before her cross is well blocked.

Oshoala then tussles with Charles and complains bitterly to Swiss referee Esther Staubli.

18:27 , George Flood

37 mins: Patri, Bonmati and Hansen have all displayed some super skills and footwork in this first half.

The former links up nicely with Oshoala, but it’s solid defending from Perisset to snuff out the danger this time.

18:25 , George Flood

35 mins: Another spell of Chelsea possession ends with them being pressed and robbed inside their own half, this time Leupolz losing out.

Barca move the ball at pace once again with more nifty passing, but Chelsea get bodies in the path of Bonmati, who tries to create the space for a wayward shot from the edge of the box that was never troubling Berger.

18:24 , George Flood

Lioness Lucy Bronze is on crutches as she takes in the action from pitchside.

She’s only expected to miss a couple of weeks after keyhole surgery on the knee injury suffered at Stamford Bridge, much to the relief of England and Sarina Wiegman.

 (PA)
(PA)

18:20 , George Flood

31 mins: A break in play now and a chance for Chelsea’s players to both take on some water and receive a pep talk from Emma Hayes over on the sideline.

‘Keeper Berger is down after a collision and will need some treatment.

18:17 , George Flood

29 mins: Sublime feet from Bonmati, who beats Cuthbert and Leupolz all ends up before a key block from Mjelde earns Barcelona another corner.

Chelsea get a pressure-relieving whistle for a handball by Patri inside the six-yard box.

18:16 , George Flood

27 mins: Another patient spell of possession now for Chelsea, but it’s all very harmless and almost entirely within their own half.

They have offered absolutely nothing going forward since that first couple of minutes. Kerr is a spectator.

They end up giving it away in a silly area and here come Barca again...

18:13 , George Flood

25 mins: A big chance for Barca goes begging!

It’s a superb dummy from Bonmati after Hansen had got to the byline and squared after an unfortunate slip from Charles.

It’s teed up perfectly for Mariona, but she can’t direct her powerful strike on target.

18:11 , George Flood

23 mins: A harmless header from Paredes drifts well wide at the back post after a corner earned by Oshoala.

Attentive set-piece defending from Charles and Carter for Chelsea.

18:09 , George Flood

20 mins: Chelsea are enjoying a bit of possession now, taking the sting out of Barcelona’s building momentum.

No service into Sam Kerr at all though just yet. Chelsea’s top scorer was also a peripheral figure in the first leg.

18:06 , George Flood

17 mins: The first yellow card of the evening goes to Chelsea winger Reiten, who clatters into Paredes and has her name taken.

Another half-chance for Barca a few moments ago as Bonmati’s ball from a difficult angle had to be palmed away from goal by Berger.

18:05 , George Flood

13 mins: Rolfo and Eriksson are both back on and fine to continue.

Eriksson’s lack of pace caused issues for Chelsea in the first leg and is rearing its head again already here.

She’s really struggling against Hansen in these opening stages.

18:00 , George Flood

11 mins: Hansen is again a thorn in Chelsea’s side, weaving to the byline and earning a corner.

A dangerous delivery from the right is headed over by Rolfo, who had a painful clash there with Sweden team-mate Eriksson.

Both players will need treatment.

17:59 , George Flood

9 mins: Hansen, whose early wonder-strike settled Saturday’s first leg at Stamford Bridge, has been an absolute menace for Barca so far in this opening 10 minutes.

She plays a great one-two with Mariona inside the box before seeing a shot blocked.

Oshoala then blazes the rebound over.

GOOOA... NO!

17:56 , George Flood

8 mins: A reprieve for Chelsea as an opening goal from Barcelona is quickly waved off.

A fine left-wing cross from Rolfo is inexplicably allowed to bounce in a dangerous area by Eriksson, with Hansen then beating Charles to the ball and slotting past Berger from close range.

However, she controlled it with her hand and the effort won’t stand.

17:54 , George Flood

6 mins: Chelsea are losing their way after a bright start now.

Barcelona are being allowed to settle into an ominous passing rhythm and are getting some dangerous service into the box.

17:51 , George Flood

4 mins: The first signs of danger from Barcelona as Oshoala - who looked marginally offside - is slipped in down the left channel and beats her marker before firing harmlessly across the box.

17:50 , George Flood

2 mins: This has been a very positive start from Chelsea in the opening couple of minutes.

They’ve dominated the ball surprisingly and are pressing high, causing a little bit of early anxiety in Barcelona’s defensive ranks.

Fleming has been particularly influential in driving the visitors forward.

A cross from the right isn’t dealt with and almost leads to a first chance for Emma Hayes’ side...

KICK-OFF

17:47 , George Flood

Anthem finished, pre-match team pictures taken and pendants exchanged by the captains, it’s time to get underway in this Champions League semi-final second-leg decider.

Barca, in their familiar home strips, get us off and running after a first blast of the whistle from Swiss referee Esther Staubli.

Chelsea are kicking from right to left in this first half, in white away kits.

Chelsea must be ‘disciplined and smart’ to counter Barcelona style

17:10 , George Flood

Barcelona will dominate possession tonight, with Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson calling for her side to be disciplined, focused and clever in their bid to combat such a style and take their chances on the counter.

“Barca have a trademark style of play,” said the Blues skipper on Wednesday. “They are very smart players, they take what you give them and that’s why you have to be on your toes in all areas and ready for anything they throw at us. We know their style, we know it’s possession based.

“We know they want to keep the ball, drag us out of areas and exploit those areas. For us, it’s about being disciplined, being smart and being ready for anything.”

Fantastic to see one of the very best back in action tonight.

To have suffered such a devastating injury when she did, on the eve of the Euros, made it especially heartbreaking for Putellas.

She’ll be hoping for a key role off the bench this evening no doubt.

Putellas on bench as Barcelona swap three

16:45 , George Flood

Barcelona head coach Jonatan Giraldez makes three alterations to his team from the first leg.

Spanish defender Marta Torrejon, who hit the post with a late header at Stamford Bridge, deputises for the injured Lucy Bronze on the right of defence.

The remaining changes are in attack, where Geyse and Salma Paralluelo make way for Mariona Caldentey and Asisat Oshoala.

Alexia Putellas makes the bench as expected and the home fans will eagerly await her likely introduction in the second half.

Fleming replaces Cankovic in sole Chelsea change

So Emma Hayes makes just one change to the Chelsea starting XI from Saturday’s first-leg defeat at Stamford Bridge,

It comes in midfield, where Canada legend Jessie Fleming is preferred to Serbian international Jelena Cankovic.

Pernille Harder has to make do with a place on the bench again after making her long-awaited return from injury with a cameo at the weekend.

Lauren James is also among the substitutes once more, having had a limited impact off the bench on Saturday.

Chelsea face toughest test in 11 years under Emma Hayes

16:24 , George Flood

It is hard to see tonight as anything other than Chelsea’s most difficult match in more than a decade under Emma Hayes, writes Dom Smith.

With Hayes at the helm, the Blues have won five WSL titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and a Community Shield. Never have they felt quite as heavy underdogs as they do ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg in Spain.

Chelsea are still in the tie, but their chances of reaching a second final in three years appear wafer thin. Barca have won every home match they have played since October 2018.

Chelsea lost 4-0 to the Catalans in the 2021 Champions League final, and what makes their task tonight even more daunting is the potential long-awaited return of Alexia Putellas.

Hayes doesn’t fear Putellas return

16:15 , George Flood

Emma Hayes insists she doesn’t fear the return of Alexia Putellas tonight, but rather she hopes her involvement makes it an even grander occasion with an even bigger audience at the famous Camp Nou.

“We know every player is fantastic. Hopefully her return adds another 10,000 people to the crowd,” said the Chelsea boss.

“I have said it time and time again, we have a dressing room of players that want to be in this position. We will give it everything we have got.”

Putellas fan frenzy

16:08 , George Flood

Barcelona fans gather for a sight of returning hero Alexia Putellas.

You wonder how many more tickets will be sold at the Camp Nou tonight as the result of her eagerly-anticipated return from a torn ACL after nine months.

The crowd had been predicted at around the 65,000 mark, before confirmation that the Ballon d’Or holder would be in the squad.

27,697 were at Stamford Bridge for Saturday’s first leg - a British record attendance for a women’s European fixture.

Hayes: Chelsea are ‘built to cope’ with these challenges

15:58 , George Flood

Few give Chelsea a realistic chance of overturning that narrow first-leg deficit tonight, but inspirational head coach Emma Hayes insists her resilient squad is built for these sorts of challenges.

“We’re looking forward to playing at this magnificent stadium,” she said.

“It’s important for us to be in the tie. At 1-0, there is no doubt with their history here, we have to be at our very best. We have a dressing room of players that want to be in this position, and I know for sure we will give it everything we’ve got.

“This is not pressure. This is a joy, to take part in something we are working hard every day to do. Mentality is something we work at all of the time, not one game.

“While there are different things at stake, a Champions League final at stake, the players need no motivation, but they definitely need all of the skills that have been developed over a long period of time to manage playing in front of a large, noisy crowd, and a team that are going to keep the ball for longer periods than we are.

“This is a strength of our team. We are built to cope with those challenges.”

Barcelona vs Chelsea prediction

15:44 , George Flood

Barcelona have scored 105 goals in winning all 25 of their league matches so far this season, conceding just five in the process to emphasise just how big the task facing Chelsea is tonight.

The hosts will have the majority of possession, with it down to the Blues to be clinical when their chances do come in front of goal.

This Barcelona team looks too good to slip up though, particularly on home soil in front of more than 65,000 fans, and they can expect to ease into another Women’s Champions League final.

Barcelona to win 3-0, aggregate 4-0.

Chelsea team news

15:43 , George Flood

Chelsea’s hopes of containing a star-studded Barca attack and the returning Alexia Putellas tonight remain hamstrung by the continued absences of first-choice centre-backs Millie Bright and Kadeisha Buchanan.

England defender Bright will be out for a few more weeks after a procedure to clean out her knee, while her Canadian colleague recently hurt her ankle on international duty and has not recovered in time.

Fran Kirby has made the trip tonight but won’t play due to her own ongoing knee problem, while Czech midfielder Katerina Svitkova continues her recovery from knee surgery performed in February.

Barcelona team news

15:37 , George Flood

Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas made the trip to west London on Saturday but did not play as she closed in on a long-awaited return from nine months out with a torn ACL.

However, the current Ballon d’Or holder is in the squad tonight and expected to feature for the first time since suffering that heartbreaking injury with Spain on the eve of last summer’s European Championship.

But Barcelona are without Lucy Bronze, with the England right-back having undergone minor surgery on a knee issue that forced her off in the first leg.

The key Lioness is not a doubt for this summer’s World Cup and should return within a few weeks.
