Barry Keoghan Admits ‘Saltburn’s Salacious Grave Scene Was Improvised

Saltburn star Barry Keoghan opened up about the infamous graveyard scene in Saltburn that has had a lot of people conflicted on social media regarding the true meaning behind the phrase “laid to rest.”

Since the Emerald Fennell film was released on Prime Video, online discourse has raged on about several titillating and twisted moments regarding Keoghan’s character, Oliver. One of the scenes that has viewers stunned is a moment that involves Oliver as he is overwhelmed by grief and lust as he decides to pleasure himself with some grave soil. In the scene, his love interest Felix (played by Jacob Elordi) has just been laid to rest, and Oliver cries at the grave before unbuttoning his trousers to relieve himself of the pent-up sexual tension he’s been holding on to.

Speaking on the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday, Keoghan revealed to Deadline that the scandalous scene was improvised.  “I wanted to see what Oliver would do next. I wanted to see what the next level of obsession was.” Keoghan said. “And by that [I mean], I just wanted the camera to roll. Not to kind of preempt it or rehearse it and what happened, happened. It was one take, and I think it was right. It moved the story forward.”

Saltburn received two Golden Globe nominations for Keoghan in Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and co-star Rosamund Pike for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.

In another scene ablaze on social media, Oliver goes around the Saltburn estate dancing in the nude to “Murder on the Dance Floor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Keoghan jokingly added, “I didn’t know I could move my hips that way. Honestly, I didn’t. The dance scene was cool. I’d love to kind of do a musical next, I think.  I’m just putting that out there. I can’t sing, though.”
