BBC Breakfast presenter Carol Kirkwood has defended her 14-year age gap with husband Steve Randall.

Carol, who's 62, first met her husband Steve, who is 48, around seven years ago. Carol announced their engagement live on air on BBC Breakfast in May 2022, and the couple tied the knot at a small ceremony in December 2023.

Opening up about their relationship during an interview with the Express, weather presenter Carol revealed that she has received "a few comments" about their age gap over the years, and she believes that wouldn't be the case if Steve was older than her.

"If our ages were the other way around, nobody would ever mention it. I've had a few comments but I don't care," she said.

"We've moved on from the days when he might have been described as my toy-boy or people might call me a cougar. We're happy together and that's all that matters."

Carol went on to describe Steve as "kind and intelligent," before sharing that their "romantic" and "small, intimate" wedding was the "best thing" that she has ever done.

She previously opened up about her romance ahead of their wedding last year, describing Steve as the "perfect" man.

"My fiancé is very handsome. He's very kind and caring and he makes me laugh. Steve's a good cook too. He's all I could ever want. In my eyes he's perfect," Carol said at the time.

"We were friends before we became romantically involved so we knew each other quite well before we started dating."

The former Strictly Come Dancing star added: "That was nice because it just kind of happened. Neither of us were looking for romance and there it was, it just evolves.

"It's so lovely. Who'd have thought that at this ripe old age, I'd be getting married again? I certainly didn't. There's so much to look forward to in the next 20 years."
