BBC comedy Boarders has officially been renewed for a second season.

Season one of the coming-of-age drama was released in February this year and received rave reviews, earning a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. The show centres on five Black inner-city teenagers who are offered scholarships to a prestigious British boarding school.

Following the success of the first series, the broadcaster announced today (June 4) that Boarders will be back for another instalment, with a new challenge for it's teen leads.

"Series two sees a new era for St Gilbert’s, with headmaster Bernard - who had brought the scholarship students into the school - suspended following a school rebellion," teases the synopsis.

"Now acting headmistress Carol Watlington-Geese (who also happens to be the mother of Jaheim’s nemesis, Rupert) is at the helm - and she wants them gone."

Whilst season one saw these "five outsiders begin to thrive", season two promises to test the scholarship pupils on how much they’re willing to sacrifice just to survive.

Josh Tedeku (Jaheim), Jodie Campbell (Leah), Sekou Diaby (Toby), Myles Kamwendo (Omar) and Aruna Jalloh (Femi) will all reprise their roles in the second series.

Additional returning cast members include Harry Gilby who plays Rupert, Tallulah Greive as Beatrix and Florence actress Rosie Graham.

"Witty and sharp, Boarders gets to the heart of what it means to learn who you are when you’re being simultaneously ostracized and objectified," wrote Variety in their review.

Meanwhile, Rolling Stones deemed Boarders a show that will likely "scratch the itch for anyone already missing Netflix’s Sex Education."

Boarders is created and written by BAFTA-nominated Daniel Lawrence Taylor, who also stars in the series as Gus, the scholarship student's mentor.

It's thought that season two will also comprise of six 45 minute episodes, which will air on BBC Three and be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
