BBC newsreader George Alagiah has died aged 67, following a battle with bowel cancer.

A statement from his agent Mary Greenham confirmed that Alagiah "died peacefully today, surrounded by his family and loved ones".

"George fought until the bitter end but sadly that battle ended earlier today," she added. "George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public."

"He simply was a wonderful human being. My thoughts are with Fran, the boys and his wider family."

The BBC paid tribute to the "much-loved journalist and presenter" online, in a statement shared by BBC director-general Tim Davie.

"Across the BBC, we are all incredibly sad to hear the news about George," began Mr Davie. "We are thinking of his family at this time.

"George was one of the best and bravest journalists of his generation who reported fearlessly from across the world as well as presenting the news flawlessly."

"He was more than just an outstanding journalist, audiences could sense his kindness, empathy and wonderful humanity," the statement continued. "He was loved by all and we will miss him enormously."

Alagiah was diagnosed with bowel cancer in April 2014. The BBC journalist underwent treatment and was in remission, but his agent confirmed that the cancer had returned in January 2018.

In June 2020, Alagiah announced that the cancer had spread to his lungs, liver and lymph nodes.

The BBC News at Six presenter stepped back from work in October 2021, with a statement from his agent at the time confirming his "break from studio duties to deal with a further spread of cancer".

He returned to the newsroom in April 2022, but took another break from work in October 2022 citing health reasons.

Alagiah was appointed an OBE for services to journalism in 2008.

He leaves behind his wife Frances and two children.
