BBC Radio 1 Xtra host DJ Ace has quit the station after 21 years of service to the broadcaster.

DJ Ace is one of Radio 1 Xtra's most popular hosts, and has presented various shows on the network, including many of its prime slots.

In a statement released today (December 21), DJ Ace, whose real name is Ashley Asomani, announced his departure via Instagram.

"I've loved my time at 1Xtra and have so many proud moments to reflect on. I'm very thankful for all the opportunities I have had," he said ahead of his final R&B show, which will air on January 20.

"As someone that helped launch the station in 2002 I am so incredibly proud of everything we have achieved as a network, and I'm so grateful to have been involved since Day 1," Ace wrote.

"To the incredible 1xtra listeners, some of you have literally listened to me grow from a wild yout to a grown man over 2 decades. It's because of you that I have been able to have this amazing experience for so long."

BBC 1Xtra thanked Ace for his work as an integral part of the station in a statement:

"DJ Ace has decided to leave the station after 21 years. Ace has been an integral part of the station over the years, hosting some of the most iconic moments."

It added: "Thank you for everything Ace."

Ace has interviewed some of music's biggest names over his two-decade career, including Alicia Keys, Akon, Usher, Lizzo and John Legend.

Ace went through a schedule switch-up earlier this year, moving from a weekday slot to the Saturday night R&B show.

His old weekday slot was taken over by the Birmingham-based DJ Day Day. After Ace's departure, the Saturday night R&B show will be presented by Chuckie.

R&B band No Guidnce will host it in the interim between Ace's final show and Chuckie's first broadcast on February 24.
