Beef's Ali Wong makes history with Golden Globes win

Beef's Ali Wong has made Golden Globes history with her win.

On Sunday night (January 7), Wong, who played Amy Lau in the Netflix comedy-drama, won Best Actress in a Limited/Anthology Series or Television Film.

In doing so, she became the first performer of Asian descent to win in that category.

After sharing a kiss with Saturday Night Live legend Bill Hader (publicly confirming rumours of a relationship in the process), Wong got on stage to take her prize and give a speech.

In her speech, she said that the friendships with the cast and crew "will always be the best thing to come out of Beef".

She also thanked her ex-husband Justin Hakuta for his support which allowed her to be, in her own words, "a working mother".

It was a big night for Beef, with Steven Yeun (who played Danny Cho) also winning in the Best Actor category and the show picking up the Best Limited/Anthology Series or Television Film award.

Yeun is the second actor of Asian descent to win in his category, following Darren Criss in 2019.

While accepting his award, Yeun said: "The story I usually tell to myself is one of isolation and separateness. And then you come up here and you have this moment and you can only just think about everyone else. And that feels like the plot of Frozen.

"I'm just so thankful. I am just the recipient of a long line of compassionate love and protection and goodwill so, I appreciate this."

In an interview with Extra backstage after their wins, Wong said that she was "surprised" and "honoured" that she had won, and laughed that she doesn't really remember her kiss with Hader.

Creator Lee Sung Jin added that "to see everyone recognised for their hard work, it's amazing".

Responding to talk about a potential second season for the show, Lee said back in August: "We initially pitched the show as an anthology series where every season is a new beef with new characters.

"At the same time, I really love Danny and Amy and George and Paul and the world we created. So, I'm really open to it all."

Beef is available to stream on Netflix.
