An off-duty deputy was killed in a head-on car crash in Colorado on Christmas Eve.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) said 31-year-old deputy Joshua Maloy was on his way to work when he was involved in the deadly collision.

The Greeley man was driving a Toyota Tacoma southbound on Weld County Road 49 on Sunday when a Toyota Tundra traveling northbound crossed the double-yellow median and hit the Tacoma head-on, Colorado State Police (CSP) said in a report obtained by PEOPLE.

The man driving the Tacoma was pronounced dead at the scene, CSP said, adding he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The ACSO said Maloy was a member of its agency for two years and nine months. He previously served nine and a half years with the United States Marine Corps.

“Deputy Maloy was a beloved husband, father, and deputy,” the sheriff’s office said, later adding, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating incident.”

Members of the sheriff’s office “are grieving” as well, according to the ACSO, which is “awaiting answers as CSP conducts a full investigation into what occurred.”

Meanwhile, the occupants in the Tundra — a 36-year-old woman from Loveland and two young children — survived the crash, the CSP said. The woman was hospitalized with serious injuries following the collision.

The two children were also taken to the hospital after the crash. The 1-year-old boy sustained minor injuries, while the 2-year-old girl was seriously injured, according to the CSP.

All three passengers in the Tundra were also wearing their seatbelts at the time of the incident. The two children were in child seats as well.

An investigation is ongoing. The CSP said speeding was not a factor in the crash, and neither were drugs or alcohol.
