Benedict Cumberbatch's new Netflix series Eric has landed a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating after first reviews.

The new limited series, which premieres this week, sees the Marvel star play Vincent Sullivan, a renowned puppeteer who desperately searches for his missing son.

In his search, he clings onto his son's drawings of a blue monster puppet called Eric, who becomes his only ally as Vincent's increasingly unhinged behaviour alienates those around him.

At the time of writing, Eric has earned a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with particular praise going towards the series' performances – even while some critics suggested that the show tries to do too much.

Here's what reviewers have been saying:

Digital Spy

"With the stream of forgettable content that Netflix can be accused of churning out, trust us when we say that this one is worth your time and attention."

The Daily Telegraph

"A lot of dramas fumble around for the right tone. That Eric can explore grief in one moment, then switch to Cumberbatch and his fluffy sidekick dancing away to the strains of 'Gloria' by Laura Branigan, is testament to the talent involved here. It’s inventive, assured and far less weird than you expect."

Empire

"Monsters real and imagined are confronted in an ambitious undertaking that successfully balances true-crime realism with child-like awe and wonder. More of this please, Netflix."

Evening Standard

"I thought I’d struggle to watch this as a parent, the ultimate nightmare of your child going missing. But we’re given an out which makes it bearable – this would never happen to me, because I’m not as awful as these people. Will I keep watching? Oh, yes."

Collider

"While there are a lot of individual aspects that are easy to admire, the series is a bit of a mess as a whole, a collection of ideas crammed into six hour-long episodes that Eric tries to wrap up too neatly by the final scene."

The Hollywood Reporter

"There are worse crimes for a series to commit than an overabundance of ambition. But a disappointing show is a disappointing show. Even when you’re getting two for the price of one."

Eric premieres on Netflix on May 30.
