The big announcement: Civilization 7 is coming in 2025

The biggest news at this year's Summer Game Fest, at least for us older PC gaming practitioners, was the announcement that Civilization 7 is on the way next year. We already knew Firaxis was working on the next game in the legendary grand strategy series, but it's nice to have it confirmed. The bad news is that they didn't reveal much—details won't come until August.

The big story: It's been a great year for action roguelikes

Even putting aside Hades 2, it's been a strong year for the action roguelike genre. The Rogue Prince of Persia released in early access and is really cool, we recently previewed Windblown, and at this year's Devolver Direct, former lead Dead Cells designer Sébastien Benard announced Tenjutsu. (It's not a roguelike, but 2D platformer Possessors looks pretty sweet, too.)

The big announcements: Doom: The Dark Ages and Gears of War: E-Day

The start and end of the show revealed two big shooter prequels: A medieval Doom (yes please) and the return of Gears:

Xbox Games Showcase reactions

Microsoft put on a packed show. Fable continues to look amusing, our first good look at Assassin's Creed: Shadows has us optimistic, and new games Mixtape and South of Midnight look pretty cool.

Ted and Rich were both impressed by a couple trailers they didn't expect to be:

  • "I had less than zero expectations for the Perfect Dark reboot, but it looks like the 2020s answer to Deus Ex I've been waiting for" —Ted

  • "I didn't want to get my hopes up about Metal Gear Solid Delta, but Konami's somehow done it" —Rich

But not everything landed like you'd hope:

The big reveal: Star Wars Outlaws

Ubisoft finally showed off extended gameplay from its open world Star Wars game, which is due out in August. Morgan also got to play a bit of Star Wars Outlaws: He liked aspects of it, but came away worried that it played things too safe.

The other big reveal: Assassin's Creed Shadows

After a trailer in the Xbox showcase, Ubisoft gave us the deep dive into its first Assassin's Creed set in Japan. Morgan didn't get to play it, but did get an hour-long look at the dual-protagonist adventure and was excited by what he saw: good-looking combat and some proper stealth.
