Dee Dee lied about her age when she met Rod

In the docuseries, Gypsy’s father Rod recalls his relationship with Dee Dee, whom he first met when he was 17 years old and still in high school. He says that at the time, Dee Dee told him she was 21 when she was actually 23. They dated for three months before Dee Dee told him she was pregnant.

Though they eventually got married, their relationship was short-lived as they separated before Gypsy was born. Gypsy says that she believes her mom’s “most devastating failure” was her divorce from Rod, and her mother blamed Gypsy for their divorce because she “wasn’t the son that he wanted.”

After being so controlled by her mother, Gypsy says she finally felt free when she went to prison, calling it the best memory in her entire life. “Since my incarceration, I am finally free to build relationships and friendships,” she says. “It’s such a good memory,” she adds of her first day in prison.

Gypsy alleges her grandfather molested her

After a car accident left Dee Dee in the hospital, Gyspy spent time living with her grandfather Claude Pitre and stepgrandmother Laura. During this time, Gypsy alleges that her grandfather molested her, alleging that he would “perform sexual acts on [her]” and “make [her] touch him.” She was 9 years old at the time. Her grandfather says that never happened.

“I don’t think that I knew that it was wrong but then my grandfather told me not to tell anyone,” she says. “He's like, ‘You don’t want papa to go to jail, do you?’ ” she recalls of what her grandfather allegedly told her.

Later in the docuseries, her grandfather denies Gypsy’s claims, alleging that she was the one who would try to touch him. “She was the one that was trying,” he says. “I said, ‘No. Don’t do that.’ She started that when she was about 4 years old.”

Gypsy reiterated her claim that she was abused by her grandfather in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, and that the sexual abuse went on for about a year.

“I've gotten to a point where I can stand on my own two feet and say, this happened to me and I'm not going to let it affect me anymore,” tells PEOPLE about the alleged abuse. “And that's why I'm talking about it now. And I think for me, making it known that it happened might prevent him from doing the same thing to another family member or another child or another person because he's still alive.”

Claude did not respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

Dee Dee’s family claims that she tried to poison her stepmother

In the documentary, Dee Dee’s family opens up about her dark side, with Gypsy’s cousin Robby Pitre comparing how Dee Dee treated Gypsy to the film Mommie Dearest. “Mommie Dearest was sick but Dee Dee was sicker,” he says.

He also recalls how Dee Dee was very upset when her father remarried and claims that Dee Dee tried to poison her stepmother by lacing her food with Roundup, a product used to kill weeds and grass.

Robby says that Laura eventually died a “slow, painful death” that he believes was a result of her being fed Roundup.

As Gypsy talks about her mother’s controlling behavior, she says that her mother never wanted her to have a relationship with her father. Gypsy says her mother claimed Rod was abusive, telling her that one night he took her by the neck and threw her across the room. “That never happened,” Gypsy says of the incident.

Family friend Marsha Smith recalls how Dee Dee would tell her and others that Gypsy’s father was out of the picture because he was a “bad man.” “Obviously, that’s not a true statement,” she adds.

Dee Dee had a heart murmur when she was a kid

In the docuseries, Dee Dee’s brother Evans Pitre recalls how she was his mother’s “favorite.” He also reveals that when Dee Dee was growing up, she had a heart murmur, which caused her mom to keep her from a lot of activities.

“She wouldn’t be able to go play outside,” he explains. He then goes on to suggest that Dee Dee’s upbringing led to her Munchausen syndrome by proxy because she “was the sick kid.”

Prefacing that she’s “never told anyone about this before,” Gypsy reveals that she dealt with a pain pill addiction, which started when she was 16. “It was like an escape from my reality,” she says.

She adds that in the first few years of her incarceration, she coped by using drugs such as suboxone, a narcotic drug used to treat opioid addiction. She says that taking the drug brought her back to the pain pill addiction she had previously dealt with.

She recalls a time when she lied to her stepmother so she could pay someone back for drugs. “I told her that I accidentally broke this girl’s CD player and if she could please send $50.”

She adds that she later came clean with her stepmother about the ordeal and is currently sober. “I’m not that person anymore,” she says.

Gypsy tried to run away when she was 19

At the end of episode 2, Gypsy recalls one of her first relationships with a man named Dan. After meeting at a sci-fi convention, she recalls how they exchanged messages back and forth online and she eventually opened up to him about her home life, noting he was the first person she told she could walk.

Believing she was 15 years old at the time, Gypsy says she would fantasize about what it would be like if she was older so that they could legally be together. Sometime after, she found her Medicaid card, which revealed her true birth date and that she was actually 19.

With this new insight, Gypsy devised a plan to run away with Dan, who promised to take care of her. Stealing her mother’s pain pills and cash, Gypsy recalls how she left her mother a runaway note telling her that she knew she was 19 and wanted to live her own life as “an independent woman.”

At about 2 a.m., Gypsy hitchhiked to Dan’s friend's house, where she learned that Dan was actually on parole and couldn’t leave the state. “My first reaction was ‘Oh my God. She’s going to find me,’ ” Gypsy says at the end of the episode.

Dee Dee chained Gypsy to the bed for two weeks when she tried to run away

After Gypsy tried to run away with Dan, Dee Dee found her phone and figured out where she was staying. Gypsy voluntarily returned home with her mom when Dee Dee said that she would let her see Dan.

However, when they returned, Gypsy says her mom smashed her computer and phone. She also chained her to the bed with handcuffs and a dog leash that was connected to Dee Dee so that she could feel any time Gypsy moved in the middle of the night. Gypsy says she was chained to the bed for two weeks and her mother would not feed her every day as punishment for trying to run away.

Dee Dee put a hex on Gypsy that she would never find love

Following her short-lived relationship with Dan, Dee Dee became even more possessive of Gypsy. At one point, Gypsy says her mother put a hex on her by mixing a cow tongue and Gypsy’s menstrual blood into a mason jar with Dan and Gypsy’s photos.

After burying the mason jar in the backyard, she told Gypsy, “You will never find love. You will never be happy.” Tearing up, Gypsy adds that she sometimes believes the hex is true given her failed relationship with her ex-fiancé Ken.

Gypsy’s cousin Bobby also recalls how Dee Dee would “play with magic” growing up, including doing spells, using an Ouija board and having a wizard tattooed on her ankle.

Gypsy shot Dee Dee with a BB gun

Sometime after her failed escape to run away with Dan, Gypsy recalls how she contemplated running away again and hid a packed bag under the couch. However, when Dee Dee found the bag, the two had a major confrontation.

Gypsy alleges that she grabbed her mother’s gun from the table and shot Dee Dee “as many times as I could.” She adds, “The wounds were superficial. It barely grazed her. That’s when I realized it was a BB gun.”

When Dee Dee went to the hospital to receive medical care for her wounds, she lied to doctors, fabricating a story that she and Gypsy were robbed in the parking lot of Walmart to keep suspicion away from the truth about her and Gypsy’s home life.

However, Gypsy didn’t listen to her thinking she was a “jaded ex.”

At one point, he told her that he has an “alternate personality” who is a 500-year-old vampire who loves to kill and would kill Gypsy’s mother for her.

Gypsy says Nick then “directed” her to research ways to commit murder, suggesting poison and arson. They eventually landed on a knife as the murder weapon, which Gypsy says she stole from a local Walmart.

Gypsy told her mom she loved her before her murder

While recounting her mother’s murder, Gypsy recalls the chilling final conversation she had with her mother that night. She adds that Nick instructed her that she should tell her mother she loves her one last time.

“I gave her a big hug,” Gypsy recalls. “And I remember her telling me, ‘What’s that for? I’m not dead yet.’ It was so ironic.”

Nick allegedly raped Gypsy after Dee Dee’s murder

After the murder of her mother, Gypsy says she was completely “disassociated” from what was happening. She then alleges that Nick “commanded” her to be naked and raped her. “Because I didn’t let him rape my mother, I had to agree to let him rape me,” she alleges.

During his trial in November 2018, Nick claimed that it was consensual sex. When asked if he ever did anything sexual with Dee Dee’s body, Nick replied no, however, later during the trial, he said that he did think about raping Dee Dee and told Gypsy, per the Springfield News-Leader.

Ryan proposed to Gypsy the third time he met her

Gypsy’s husband Ryan reveals that he was corresponding with her for a year and two months before they first met. He also reveals that at the time, Gypsy had another boyfriend, but she broke up with him to be with Ryan. During their third meeting, Ryan says he snuck in a ring on his necklace and proposed.

Gypsy and Ryan had a major fight right before their wedding

As Gypsy and Ryan recount the early trials they faced in their relationship, viewers hear a phone conversation recorded ahead of their wedding in which they discussed Gypsy’s lingering feelings for her ex-fiancé Ken.

After revealing that she had a dream that she left Ryan for Ken, it comes out that Gypsy was in contact with Ken weeks before their wedding, even though she previously told Ryan they hadn’t been in contact for “months.”

“That makes you a f—--- liar, too,” Ryan tells Gypsy before hanging up the phone.

Gypsy thought about getting an annulment following a disagreement with Ryan

Though Gypsy and Ryan did follow through with their marriage, they continued to face obstacles as they dealt with their jealousy over ex-partners. Gypsy reveals that they had a major disagreement about one of her ex-boyfriends and Ryan’s “voice got raised a decibel too loud, and [she] fell apart.”

Ryan adds that during that fight, Gypsy told him she considered them separated. Afterward, Gypsy reached out to her stepmother for advice, who encouraged her to seek an annulment. Ryan says that he went to visit Gypsy in prison so they could talk out their issues and they both agreed that they needed therapy.

“That has been the last argument that we have had,” Gypsy says of the current state of her marriage to Ryan.
