There were shocks and surprises in this year's Oscar nominations.

The nominees for the 96th annual Academy Awards were revealed Tuesday morning, with Oppenheimer leading the pack, earning 13 total nominations. Poor Things followed with 11, while Killers of the Flower Moon got 10.

Among those nominated in the acting categories, 10 stars earned their first-ever nominations: Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Colman Domingo (Rustin), America Ferrera (Barbie), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).

There were some notable absences, though. Leonardo DiCaprio was excluded from the Best Actor category. In Killers of the Flower Moon, the actor, 49, played Ernest Burkhart opposite Lily Gladstone, who earned a Best Actress nomination. Costar Robert De Niro was recognized in the Best Supporting Actor category for the film as well.

The Color Purple only landed one nomination: for supporting actress Danielle Brooks. That meant snubs for the movie-musical in Best Picture, as well as for cast members Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P. Henson.

While Barbie scored a number of top nods, including Best Picture, Greta Gerwig was left out of the Best Director category, though she landed a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. Additionally, Margot Robbie didn't earn a nomination for her titular role. (The star, 33, however, is recognized as a producer in the Best Picture lineup.)

Emerald Fennell's Saltburn, Ben Affleck's Air, Andrew Haigh's All of Us Strangers, Sofia Coppola's Priscilla and Ava DuVernay's Origin each received zero nominations. Wonka and The Iron Claw were also shut out altogether.

Asteroid City also landed zero nods, though its director Wes Anderson was recognized in Best Live-Action Short for his The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Ferrari's Penelope Cruz was left out of the Best Supporting Actress category, as was May December's Julianne Moore in a Mary Kay Letourneau–inspired role. Her costars Natalie Portman and Charles Melton were also left out of the acting categories despite several precursor nominations leading up to the Oscars.

Willem Dafoe didn't make it in for his supporting role in Poor Things, though his costar Mark Ruffalo slid into the category, and the film earned many more nods.

While Barbie managed two tunes in the Best Original Song category, Dua Lipa's "Dance the Night Away" didn't make the cut. Instead, Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" and Mark Ronson's Ryan Gosling song "I'm Just Ken" earned recognition. Meanwhile, Lenny Kravitz's Rustin track "Road to Freedom" and Olivia Rodrigo's "Can’t Catch Me Now" from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes were snubbed.

The drama Past Lives scored nods for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, but star Greta Lee didn't get a spot in the Best Actress pool. Also, the coming-of-age Judy Blume comedy Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret didn't register in the Best Adapted Screenplay category or translate to a Best Supporting Actress nod for Rachel McAdams.

Among documentaries, American Symphony and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie were shut out of the category, though American Symphony made it to the Best Original Song field.

The 96th annual Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
