Billie Eilish Doesn't Like 'Being Vulnerable in a Romantic Way': 'I Literally Hate Who I Am So Much When I'm in Love'

Billie Eilish is getting candid about her shortcomings in relationships.

In conversation with Lana Del Rey for Interview magazine released June 13, the "Birds of a Feather" singer opened up about her relationship style — and revealed why she doesn't like who she is when she's in love.

Referencing her song "CHIHIRO," Del Rey, 38, asked Eilish, 22, whether it's "more dangerous to fall in love with you? Or is it more dangerous for you to fall in love?"

"Big question, Lana," Eilish responded.

After some banter, the "Ocean Eyes" singer admitted that it's "50-50."

"I literally hate who I am so much when I’m in love," she said.

"I really don’t like being — I was going to say out of control, but there’s ways that I do like being out of control. I have a power issue and a control issue, and I also don’t like being vulnerable in a romantic way," she added.

She then went on to explain that it makes her feel "uncomfortable" — and it made her wonder how many times she's "really been in love."

Elsewhere in the interview, the "Video Games" singer asked Eilish if she "does get hurt sometimes" because she does a good job at hiding it — but was so vulnerable on her latest studio album.

The "Wildflower" singer responded, "I would rather suffer in silence than tell you something’s bothering me and have you think I’m sensitive."

"I come off as a person that doesn’t care. I care about people and I have love and passion, but in relationships, I found myself never ever expressing any of my needs," she added.

"It was interesting to notice I was doing that, and that’s what these lyrics are about. It’s almost like I resent myself for not advocating for myself, because maybe if I had, things would’ve changed. But I’ve always had an issue with weakness," she concluded.

Eilish — who released Hit Me Hard and Soft last month — was last linked to The Neighbourhood frontman Jesse Rutherford.

Eilish’s representative confirmed her split from Rutherford to PEOPLE in May 2023. The exes, who were last seen together at Coachella in April 2023, dated for less than a year before announcing their split.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone interview, Eilish joked she never wanted to be in a relationship again. “I plan on never dating again,” she said.

“That’s not true, obviously. But no, I don’t see myself being serious with anyone until I find someone that really feels right to me, and that is not interesting to me right now,” Eilish added.
