2011 MAMA Awards honor top K-Pop acts

Korean media outlet Mnet recently held the anticipated 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards on November 29 in Singapore. The MAMAs, as the awards show is known, is considered one of the music industry's top recognition shows in South Korea. Stars and performers from all over Asia flocked to the Singapore Indoor Stadium to watch almost two dozen of South Korea's premiere actors and celebrities hand out awards to winners in more than a dozen categories.

Hallyu superstars Super Junior took home the Daesang Award for Album of the Year for its 2011 hit album, "Mr. Simple". The boys' SM Entertainment labelmates and fellow Hallyu stars Girls' Generation won the Artist of the Year Daesang while YG Entertainment's superstar girl group 2NE1 underscored their dominance in the song category, claiming the coveted Song of the Year award for its confident track "I Am The Best". The Best Music Video Award went to "Love Song," an offering from 2NE1's YG labelmate and fellow Hallyu stars Big Bang.

In the Singer category, Superstar K winner Huh Gak walked away with the Best New Male Artist Award, besting Kim Ji Su, Boyfriend, A-Train, and B1A4, while girl group A Pink defeated Brave Girls, Jang Jae In, Han Groo, and Dal Shabet for Best New Female Artist. The Male Group Award went to Super Junior, who bested TVXQ, B2ST, Big Bang, and 2PM while the Female Group Award saw Girls' Generation triumph over Brown Eyed Girls, KARA, 2NE1, and f(x). The Male Singer Award (Solo) went to actor and singer Kim Hyun Joong, who trumped Kim Bum Soo, Kim Tae Woo, Sung Si Kyung, and Wheesung, while Baek Ji Young registered an unexpected triumph in the Female Singer Award (Solo) over G.NA, IU, Seo In Young, and Kim Wan Sun.

In the Genre category, 4minute's HyunA won the Best Dance Performance (Solo) Award for "Bubble Pop!," beating Kim Hyun Joong, Jay Park, Jang Woo Hyuk, and G.NA. In the group categories, the Best Dance Performance (Male Group) went to B2ST for "Fiction," winning over TVXQ, Big Bang, Super Junior, MBLAQ, and INFINITE, while miss A's "Goodbye Baby" defeated finalists 2NE1, 4minute, T-ara, SECRET, and SNSD for Best Dance Performance (Female Group).

The Best Vocal Performance categories were won by IU ("Good Day," Solo) and 2NE1 ("Lonely," Group). CNBLUE won the Best Band Performance for "Intuition," while Leessang's "Turned Off The TV" defeated tracks by Tablo, Mighty Mouth, Clover, and Simon D, for Best Rap Performance. Baek Ji Young's "That Woman" from the "Secret Garden" OST won the Best OST Award, defeating songs from the "Dream High," "City Hunter," Athena," and "The Greatest Love" soundtracks.

Other winners included Jane Zhang (Best Artist, China), Koda Kumi (Hottest Asian Artist), Aziatix (Best New Asian Artist - Group), Wei Chen (Best New Asian Artist - Solo), Seo In Young (Best Style in Music), and YB (Mnet PD's Choice Award). Congratulations to all the winners!
