Sony pulled this 'sexy doctor' PlayStation Vita ad

Sony removed its controversial Vita ad.

When it comes to advertising its gaming consoles, Sony has never been especially consistent.

Some, like the one with well-known characters celebrating a gamer, are great. Others, like the one featuring the creepiest baby ever, are nightmarish.

But the company’s latest attempt to promote its PlayStation Vita handheld is downright embarrassing.

The new “Doctor” ad’s sexist, pandering nature was so blatant that Sony quickly yanked it from its YouTube feed, but not before it got noticed and archived:

In the commercial, a female doctor accuses the (presumably young, male) viewer of spending too much time masturbating. It's a message delivered with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, as the doctor wets her lips and vamps like a porn star before reassuring the viewer that it's okay, everyone does it. And you can do it with her...

That's when she pulls out a Vita and the ad notes it's talking about the Vita's Remote Play feature. Gotcha!

The Verge reports the company behind the spot was the same one that put together a print ad for the Vita in 2012 showing a woman with breasts on both sides of her body with the tagline "Touch Both Sides for Added Enjoyment."

Sex certainly sells, but considering the ongoing firestorm over the portrayal of women in games and the games industry, the commercial is just totally out of sync.

Besides, the Vita is already seeing a sales increase thanks to Remote Play. With momentum at its back, the company hardly needs to court controversy to bring attention to its handheld.
