Former PM Lee Kuan Yew to be immortalised on screen

Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, one of modern Singapore's founding fathers, will be immortalised on screen.

Singapore-based movie company Homerun Pictures and Hong Kong film company We Movies will jointly produce "1965", a film that will tell the story of Lee Kuan Yew's struggle for Singapore's independence.

According to Chinese news website Sina, the planned political thriller will focus on documenting the former Minister Mentor's life through 90 tumultuous days in 1965 when racial and ideological differences were rampant in the city-state.

The cast of "1965" is rumoured to include Maggie Cheung, Hollywood actress Julianne Moore and Tony Leung Chiu Wai, who may play Lee Kuan Yew. The film is also said to include Singapore's Qi Yu Wu.

"1965" is to be jointly directed by acclaimed Hong Kong director Peter Chan Ho Sun, who has directed "Wu Xia", and local director Lee Thean-jeen who has directed "Homecoming" and TV series "The Pupil" and "Calefare".

Other Asians producers, writers and other crew will form the production team.

A $5-million budget has been attached the the project. The film is targeted for release just before National Day next year.

The movie is said to be "in the same vein" as Western political thrillers such as "Munich" and "Empire of the Sun".
