‘Bodkin’ Star Robyn Cara Gets Ready for the First Gotham TV Awards in Carolina Herrera

Early on Tuesday afternoon, actress Robyn Cara looks out at the Manhattan skyline from her room at The William Vale hotel. An episode of “Friends” — her comfort show — is cued up on the television as she settles into the glam process. Hairstylist Nai’vasha Johnson straightens and pulls her dark brown hair back into a low ponytail, as her makeup artist Bo selects from a suite of Chanel beauty products. In a few hours a car will arrive to take her from Brooklyn to downtown Manhattan for the inaugural Gotham TV Awards ceremony, where Cara is nominated for outstanding performance comedy series for her role in “Bodkin.”

“I don’t really know what goes down. I’ve just seen it on TV and stuff, but I have no idea really what to expect,” says Cara of anticipating her first awards ceremony.

A two-piece Carolina Herrera look, a long white tulle skirt with a sequined tulle cropped bodice, hangs from the side of a wardrobe, and a pair of strappy silver Jimmy Choo sandals are propped underneath.

“I was like — oh my god, this is stunning. The corset detail is just so beautiful. And it felt very fairy-tale-y and very cute,” says Cara of selecting the look alongside her stylist, Rachael Perry. “I’ve been working with her for a bit now and she’s great. She really helps bring everything together, and she’s very good at pushing me out of my comfort zone. I’m very new to all of this and the world of fashion,” adds Cara, who wore a Chanel look for the series premiere last month. “It’s really exciting to kind of get to try all these different looks.”

Cara’s boyfriend Nikhil Parmar, who she met through the London theater community, later retrieves a suite of diamond Cartier accessories — a necklace, two rings, and a pair of earrings — from the safe. He helps her fasten the necklace, the finishing touch to the ethereal look.

Cara, who’s also known for her role in Apple TV+ comedy “Trying,” arrived in New York last week and spent the weekend visiting family and friends ahead of Tuesday’s award ceremony. The British actress is nominated alongside her costar Siobhán Cullen, and “Bodkin,” which premiered on Netflix in May, was up for best breakthrough series.

“It’s a really fun show. It’s really unique in its tone,” says Cara of “Bodkin,” which is about a trio of true-crime podcasters investigating an unsolved disappearance in an Irish town. “We just had a really good time making it. We were in Ireland for about six months.” As for whether they’ll return for a second season?

“Still waiting on the Netflix algorithm,” says Cara.
