SINGAPORE — The body of a 38-year-old Bangladeshi worker who fell into the sea after a crane collapsed at the Keppel shipyard in Tuas was found on Wednesday morning (24 August).

A Keppel Shipyard spokesperson said, “Keppel Shipyard values the safety and life of every worker and we deeply regret this tragic incident. We are working closely with the authorities to conduct thorough investigations and review.”

Expressing deepest condolences to the worker’s family for the accident, the spokesperson added that Keppel Shipyard is providing its full assistance to them.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said on Wednesday that it has recovered the body of the worker, who was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.

The accident, which happened on Monday morning, involved a crane along a pier that had toppled and leaned against a vessel next to the pier. “Part of the concrete pier on which the crane was standing on had collapsed. This also caused the crane to be partially submerged under water,” the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Search operations for the worker, who was employed by Kumarann Marine, began following the collapse.

Four other workers – two Bangladeshis, one Chinese national and one Singaporean – suffered minor injuries, and are in stable condition.

MOM said it is investigating the cause of the accident, and has stopped all works at the pier.
