A new book is offering a behind-the-scenes look at Married... with Children.

Married… with Children vs. The World, a new memoir by the show’s writer-producer Richard Gurman, offers an inside look on creating and producing what would become one of the most memorable sitcoms of the 80’s and 90’s. The book will be released by Permuted Press this April.

In the book, Gurman provides a “remarkable inside account” into working with the show's creators, Michael Moye and Ron Leavitt, as well as former Fox CEO Barry Diller. The book will detail how the creators “butted heads with network standards” in order to bring their vision to broadcast on the network, according to a press release shared with PEOPLE.

Gurman noted that the show provided audiences with “something they couldn’t find on the established networks” — a more hardened, but “satirical” take on everyday family life — which was in stark contrast to other more traditional family shows at the time.

Married... with Children aired for 11 seasons from 1987 to 1997 and followed the life of a suburban Chicago family, including Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill), his wife Peggy (Katey Sagal), their daughter Kelly (Christina Applegate) and son Bud (David Faustino).

It featured topics that strayed from the normal family sitcom formula including marital problems and working class family struggles, which viewers were drawn to and propelled the show to new heights.

Married… With Children VS. the World celebrates the rebellious, satirical vision of the show and the battle to keep it alive that paved the way for the tremendous diversity in family comedy style we see today,” the publisher says.

The book will include cast interviews with actors O’Neill, Sagal, David Faustino, Amanda Bearse and David Garrison and interviews with media moguls and former network executives.

“When he sent me his new book Married… with Children vs. the World, I figured it would be a trip down memory lane. So I was stunned by some revelations I never knew. And reminded how brilliant much of the writing was,” said O’Neill, who added that he had worked with Gurman for 11 years.

“I had almost as much fun reading Married… with Children vs. the World as I had working on the show," Faustino shared. "Almost. Richard Gurman chronicles, from his vantage point inside the writers’ room and the sound booth, how we broke the china in the family sitcom kitchen, and upended the television industry by doing so. What could be more fun than that?"

Married… with Children vs. The World hits shelves on April 23, and pre-orders are now available.
