Boston Police Officers Sing 'Happy Birthday' to 911 Caller: ‘Everyone Deserves to Feel Special'

A pair of Boston police officers granted a special birthday wish on Thursday, May 2 — though the request came in an unusual way.
Officers Israel Bracho and Franklin Ortiz had just started their respective midnight shifts when a caller dialed 911 and asked someone to sing “Happy Birthday” to him, The Boston Globe reported.
The call initially came in as a wellness check, according to Boston's WHDH and ABC affiliate WCVB-TV. Soon, the officers realized it was actually the man’s birthday.
“We thought it was a joke,” Bracho told WCVB. “So once we verified it actually was his birthday we said, 'Well, everyone has one birthday so everyone deserves to feel special on their day.' ”

Per the outlets, Bracho and Ortiz bought a muffin and candles before heading over to the resident’s home for a special surprise.
"We decided you can't show up to someone's house empty-handed,” Bracho explained, WHDH and WCVB. “My mother raised me right.”
The officers’ body cameras captured the moment they arrived at 25-year-old’s home. They then stepped inside, lit a candle and sang him the birthday song.

“You guys are too awesome!” a smiling Chris said in a clip shared by CBS affiliate WBZ.
Boston Police Department spokesperson Sergeant Detective John Boyle said Chris later revealed that the officers’ kind gesture made his day, according to WHDH.
Bracho said the visit “was a good break from the normal calls” officers get in Boston, per WCVB. He thought “it was cool” to see Chris’ reaction to the surprise.

The call showed another side of what officers do on a nightly basis, which Bracho told the outlet is "great" and doesn't get the same kind of air time he got for his kind gesture.
"Trust and believe, in other parts of the city, there's a lot of good work being done that don't get the same recognition," he added, per WCVB.
