Boy George has a fan in Bryan Cranston — and he serenaded him up close recently.

The pop star, who made his name in the '80s with band Culture Club, sung his huge worldwide hit "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" to the Breaking Bad star while working the tables at a gig.

George, 62, was performing at a corporate gig, with movie director Ron Howard and Tesla boss Elon Musk also among the guests. “I thought, 'These people are not going to come to me. I'm going to have to get off the stage and get in the crowd,'" George recalled.

Sharing memories as he publishes his new memoir Karma, George has to pinch himself that the surreal moment with Cranston, 67, even happened. “This is mad, right?” he told PEOPLE with a laugh of the evening a few months ago.

"Soon I was face-to-face with Bryan Cranston. I was like 'This is kind of great.'"

It could have been awkward. But George tells PEOPLE, “He’s so iconic looking. Obviously it's a weird thing to sing in someone's face — particularly if you think you know them. He was very sweet; he made me feel very comfortable.”

Reputations preceded both of them. “Obviously I've watched Breaking Bad, and I was like ‘Oh my God, I know this guy's so weird.' But I also know he is a person. It was just a funny moment.”

And the pair clearly got on — Cranston has since appeared in one of George’s latest videos.

Today, he is able to relish such opportunities. “Over the years I've been in situations I wish I'd been more present,” the singer adds. “You can't get more present than singing 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?' to Bryan Cranston. We were literally nose-to-nose."
