Brassic is set to get its first-ever Christmas special following on from its upcoming fifth season.

The hit Sky series, which stars Michelle Keegan and Joe Gilgun, is set to return to screens next month following last year's fourth season.

A Christmas episode is reportedly in the works for later this year, which will film next month and will also reportedly feature a big name casting too, according to The Sun, which Digital Spy also understands.

Brassic follows the lives of a group of friends in a fictional northern town who commit various crimes but wonder if there is life beyond their town.

Season 4 ended with the exit of Dylan (Damien Molony), as the character was bundled into a car while being kidnapped by hired goons.

Speaking about his exit, Molony told Radio Times last year: "They were really exciting scenes to film, no doubt, but also emotional for me.

"Because I've had four incredible years of, essentially, laughing and to suddenly shoot these scenes on my own, without the gang... there were a couple of moments that night where I was like: 'This is the end...'"

However, he did tease a possible appearance in the next season, adding: "There'll be a little bit, I think, in series 5".

Molony added of saying goodbye to his colleagues: "I will be devastated when the messages from the WhatsApp group start coming in, in the next few weeks, when people are saying: 'Oh my God, do you remember when this happened on set?'

"I think it's very exciting for the show to lose a member of the team and to see how that affects the group dynamic. [But] it's a sad day."

The show, which also stars Tom Hanson, Aaron Heffernan, Ryan Sampson and Parth Thakerar, was renewed for season 5 almost exactly a year ago.

Brassic airs on Sky Max and NOW, and returns for season 5 next month.
