Brentford rule out panic buys during last week of January transfer window

Brentford will only consider long-term targets this month, after fixing their priority position of left-back by loaning Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham.

Bees manager Thomas Frank made it clear in the lead up to the January window that a left-back was their priority, to cover for injuries to Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey.

Reguilon started the season at Manchester United but they ended his loan early.

With the Spaniard not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans, Spurs agreed to cover a percentage of his wages to make the Brentford move possible.

The Bees have also signed £4million teenager Yunus Emre Konak from Turkish side Sivasspor.

Brentford lost out on long-term targets Johan Bakayoko and Brennan Johnson last summer.

They spent a combined £55.5million to sign Nathan Collins, Mark Flekken, and make Kevin Schade’s loan permanent. Neal Maupay re-joined the club on loan from Everton.

Despite having five players out injured and another three away on international duty, Brentford are not desperate to further strengthen their squad this month.

It is understood that they would only do business in the final week of the window if it meant tying down one of their long-term targets.

Brentford have been boosted by the return of Ivan Toney after his eight-month betting ban.

The striker made his return to action on Saturday, scoring the Bees’ first goal in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest that lifted them up to 14th in the Premier League.
