Dearest reader, the wait for Bridgerton season 4 may be longer than expected.

As Polin’s story comes to close with the second part of season 3, showrunner Jess Brownell shared why fans will likely have to wait two years for the next season of the hit Netflix series.

“We are working to try and put the seasons out more quickly, but they do take eight months to film and then they have to be edited, and then they have to be dubbed into every language,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “And the writing takes a very long time as well, so we’re kind of on a two-year pace, we’re trying to speed up, but somewhere in that range.”

However, Brownell remained tight-lipped about which character would take the lead in upcoming season, telling THR, “I have almost slipped up a couple of times, so keep asking, and maybe I’ll slip up.”

When asked if viewers will be happy with the direction of the series, she responded, “I think it’s hard to say. There’s so many different ships. I think one of the ships is going to be very, very happy.”

Despite not sharing which Bridgerton sibling will take center stage, Brownell teased she is “really excited about what we’re writing.”

“We’re toward the end with the writers room season, with the scripts,” she explained. “And I feel like it’s some of my best work and my writers room’s best work. We’ve just really gelled our collaboration, and we’re firing on all cylinders, so I can’t wait for fans to see what we have.”

Bridgerton season 3 concludes with two couples tying the knot. Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and his on-screen love Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) got married — and welcomed their first child — despite her being Lady Whistledown while Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and her new husband Lord John Stirling (Victor Alli) prepared for a move to Scotland.

Fans also saw Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) explore his sexuality and the introduction of John’s cousin Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) in the second half of the season. While the character of Michaela doesn’t appear in the Julia Quinn novels, John does have a cousin named Michael, who pursues and later marries Francesca following her first husband’s death in the novel, When He Was Wicked.

Brownell previously shared that season 3 contains hints as to who could take the reigns in the upcoming season.

“I think that there are some clues,” she told Today.com in May. “I don’t know that it’s completely obvious where we’re going. But there are definitely some clues for fans to pick over and theorize about.”

In April, Brownell shared that future seasons will continue to explore all types of love.

“This is a show about love in its many forms and I think that it’s only right for us to foreground queer love and to tell queer stories,” Brownell said in an interview with Pride. “I want to see more queer joy on my screens and that was definitely a priority for me when I stepped into the showrunner role.”

“How exactly that plays out over this season and the next couple seasons, I can’t say specifically,” she continued. “but I will say I’m excited for fans to see that.”
