Bridgerton's Shonda Rhimes "cried" watching season 3 finale

Bridgerton season three spoilers follow.

Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes has shared her reaction to the show’s upcoming season three finale, saying it made her cry.

The hit Netflix drama will return to screens on June 13 with the final four episodes of its third season, which will continue to follow the romance between Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).

Discussing part two’s anticipated finale — after that intimate carriage scene and cliffhanger marriage proposal — during a recent appearance on the TODAY Show, Rhimes teased: "We’re very secretive about it but I will say it is sexy and surprising in many ways. And also, I cried at the end."

"I found it very moving — and I don’t always cry. So I really got into it. I think it’s a beautiful story," she added.

Martins Imhangbe, who plays Will Mondrich on the show, also teased the finale during an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, where he stated that fans would be left "satisfied".

"I think they will be very, very, satisfied," he said. "But also, I think they're gonna want more. It's great drama. It's lovely."

The actor also spoke about where the season will leave Will and his family, saying: "I think it will put them in a very high position where they can be of influence. In terms of their relationship and people aspiring to want to be like them but also the responsibility."

The trailer for part two revealed that wedding preparations will get underway after news of Penelope and Colin’s engagement spreads throughout the Ton.

However, it soon becomes clear that the secret of Penelope's alternate persona (aka Lady Whistledown), will threaten their happily ever after.

Bridgerton seasons 1-2 and the first part of season 3 are streaming on Netflix, along with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Season 3 part 2 premieres on June 13.
