Bright calls for more precision for England's rematch with Belgium

Millie Bright called for England to be more clinical when they meet Belgium again in four days’ time, writes Sportsbeat's Milly McEvoy.

The centre-back saw her side spurn chance after chance in a comfortable 1-0 win over the Red Flames in Leicester.

The two meet again in Leuven on Tuesday night as the Lionesses look to do the double over Belgium during the Women’s Nations League group stages.

“I don’t think the scoreline reflected the game, we had so many chances and now we just have to be more ruthless,” Bright said.

“If you look back on that game we had so many chances for it to be only 1-0, that is something for us to go away to work on.

“One-nil leaves the team in it and we really needed the clean sheet and three points.”

England had seven shots on target to Belgium’s four as they played at a high tempo from the get-go.

Lauren Hemp gave the hosts the lead after just 13 minutes as she lashed home the rebound from Bright’s header onto the post.

Mary Earps pulled off two impressive saves to keep out the Belgians, who were searching for their second win of the campaign, but the home side were always comfortable.

Bright skippered her side to a first clean sheet since England’s 0-0 draw with Nigeria during the World Cup knockout stages, as they advanced on penalties.

The Lionesses narrowly beat Scotland 2-1 in their first Nations League fixture before conceding a late winner to the Netherlands.

While the margin of victory was the same as the win over the Auld Enemy, Bright believed England were much more like their old selves against Belgium.

“I’m really happy with the performance it is a really good reaction on the back of a few performances that we haven’t been happy with and our standards,” she said.

“For me, it was the aggressiveness, the willingness to get about the pitch. I think we connected well on the ball and the next step is to get the ball back in the net more.

“We go out every game to win and to perform first and foremost. Getting the clean sheet, we were really good defensively front to back. We were much more like the England that we know, we were aggressive.

“We know Belgium are a dangerous team on the counter-attack so we had to be switched on.”
