Last month, ahead of the release of her upcoming show The Valley, Brittany Cartwright confirmed she and husband Jax Taylor separated and have been living apart.

At the show’s premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday, Cartwright, 35, told PEOPLE she and Taylor, 44, had a “horrible fight” the day she moved out of their house and into an Airbnb rental.

“I just packed up my stuff and left,” Cartwright said.

The Vanderpump Rules alums share 2-year-old son Cruz, who Cartwrtight said remains her priority amid the separation. “At this point, Cruz is the most important thing, he’s all that matters,” Cartwright continued. “Other than that, like, I'm just trying to have fun and be happy right now for once.”

Cartwright hopes Taylor will “make changes that he needs to make.” She added, “My son deserves better. I deserved it better."

Taylor said at Thursday’s premiere that he and Cartwright, who tied the knot in 2019, decided “it's best for our family” to separate at this time and “take a little bit of a breather.”

“I'm not sure what the future holds for this, but, as of right now, this is the best-case scenario,” he said. “This is not a publicity stunt.”

Cartwright reiterated that she and Taylor did not announced their separation when they did in order to drum up excitement for The Valley.

“It's been hard because a lot of people think our timing is weird because the show is coming out,” she said. “But I can't control the freaking timing. I wish I could. If people have actually watched me and know my personality, they should understand this is not something I would do for a show. I am all about family, I'm all about marriage. I've been about that my entire life. This is something real that I really needed to step back from for a minute.”

Taylor teased that he and Cartwright “could still be together” going forward.

“We still see each other every single day,” the Jax’s Studio City owner said. “We have businesses together, we have a son, which is the most important thing. Nothing has really changed other than we're not sleeping in the same bed right now.”

Cartwright confirmed the separation on her and Taylor’s podcast When Reality Hits last month.

“Marriages in general are very hard and I've had a particularly rough year this past year,” the Kentucky native said. “Jax and I are taking time apart and I made the decision to move into another home to take some space for the sake of my mental health."

At the time, Cartwright said didn’t know “what the future holds” for her and Taylor, “but right now my focus is on being the best mom to Cruz.”

“Pray for us and everything will be just fine,” Cartwright concluded. “We’re good."
