Brookside star Claire Sweeney opens up over new Coronation Street role

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Brookside star Claire Sweeney has opened up about her new role on Coronation Street.

Sweeney, who will make her Corrie debut in June, is expected to cause a stir in Weatherfield when she appears as Tyrone Dobbs' mother Cassie, who Tyrone has long thought was dead.

Recently speaking about her new role during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, Sweeney said: "I've been saying it for years, actually. Whenever I get interviewed they say, 'If you can do any soap, what would it be?' and I've always said Coronation Street.

"So, I've kind of been manifesting it for 15 years!"

Going on to praise her co-stars, she added: "He's a wonderful actor, Alan [Halsall, who plays Tyrone]. He was so brilliant when I auditioned with him. And... Dame Maureen Lipman [who plays Evelyn], I'm such a fan of hers."

Sweeney also praised Lipman's "incredible" performance in the one-woman show Rose, which starts a limited run in the West End next month.

Tyrone grew up believing his mum was Jackie Dobbs and later found out from Evelyn that it was actually her daughter Cassie, who Evelyn said had passed away.

Evelyn had left Tyrone at a police station in 1982 because she didn't trust that Cassie, who had difficulties with drug addiction at the time, would be able to look after him. Jackie found Tyrone and brought him up.

"So that is the twist," Sweeney said of the storyline. "I turn up on the cobbles and I'm a bit unruly. I've got a few problems, some major problems, but what will happen?"

Sweeney, who's perhaps best known for her role as Lindsey Corkhill on Brookside, previously said that being cast on Corrie was "better than being cast in a Hollywood movie".

She continued: "I've watched it all my life and can’t quite believe that I'll now be stepping onto those famous cobbles myself.

"I was really nervous when I got the scripts to audition as this show means so much to me and my family and this is Corrie gold.

"I was beyond thrilled and very grateful when I got the call that Iain MacLeod is trusting me to play Tyrone's mum and work alongside one of my heroes, Dame Maureen Lipman."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
