Bushey crossbow killings LIVE: Suspect Kyle Clifford in 'serious condition' in hospital as weapon recovered

The man suspected of killing a mother and two daughters in Bushey remains in a serious condition in hospital, after he was found injured in a cemetery yesterday following a manhunt.

Hertfordshire Police confirmed on Thursday afternoon officers are yet to speak to suspect Kyle Clifford, 26, as he continues to receive treatment in London.

Carol Hunt, 61, who was married to BBC 5 Live racing commentator John Hunt, and two of their daughters - Louise, 25, and Hannah, 28 - were found dead at their home in Hertfordshire on Tuesday evening.

A major search was launched for Clifford, who was found injured in a cemetery in Enfield, north London around 4.15pm on Wednesday.

The former soldier is understood to be the ex-boyfriend of Louise, who is reported to have broken up with him last week.

Police confirmed officers have recovered a crossbow as part of their murder investigation.

Police were carrying out a search of his home on Thursday.

Detective Superintendent Rob Hall, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with the victims’ family and loved ones at this devastating and indescribable time.

“This was an unprecedented attack and we are determined to understand the full circumstances of what happened that evening and the events leading up to it. We are wholly committed to seeking justice for the victims and their family. “

Meanwhile friends of the three victims paid tribute to them, describing them as “beautiful souls” and “the loveliest, gentlest family”, while Bushey residents laid flowers near the crime scene and gathered for a vigil.

The BBC described the deaths of Mr Hunt’s wife and two daughters as “utterly devastating” in a note to 5 Live staff.

Messages of condolence have also poured out to Mr Hunt and his surviving daughter, from friends and figures from across the racing and broadcasting worlds.

Neighbour Su Kehinde, 60, who laid flowers at a makeshift tribute in the area on Wednesday, said: “They were the loveliest, gentlest family.

“They were the meekest human beings. They did not deserve this. They were beautiful souls.”

Meanwhile Security Minister Dan Jarvis on Thursday indicated the Home Secretary was looking into whether existing crossbow laws need to be tightened "literally as we speak" following the deaths.

An urgent investigation is underway alongside the manhunt for Kyle Clifford to understand the circumstances of the killings, the detective on the case has said.

Detective Superintendent Rob Hall, of Hertfordshire Police, said: “Our enquires will continue over the coming days to ascertain the full circumstances of what happened but I would also like to take this opportunity appeal to anyone who was in the area around Ashlyn Close from around lunchtime on Tuesday until 7pm, and believes they may have seen anything that could assist the investigation, to contact us.

“This incident will of course be of concern to local residents.

“Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be in the area today so please do speak to them if you need to.”

Members of public warned not to approach Clifford

Clifford, who is from Enfield, may be in the north London or Hertfordshire areas, police believe. They also say he may be armed with a weapon.

Another local, a father-of-two also added: “It’s very distressing we are scared to go out.”

A man who lives close to the scene said the killings were "tragic".

Riaz, who is in his 50s and declined to give a second name, said: "At 6 o'clock, my wife called me while I was at work, saying 'there are so many police cars down the road which I've never seen before', and she was distressed.

“I came early evening and I saw the cars and realised something tragic had happened.

"It's a serene, quiet road, but there was over a dozen cars here. It's quite disturbing, but any tragedy like this has a bearing on how you feel.”

Childhood friend of suspect tells of shock at manhunt

A resident of Ashlyn Close said they heard screaming on Tuesday evening as the "absolutely traumatic" incident unfolded.

The 46-year-old, who did not wish to share their name, told the PA news agency: "It was between 6.30pm and 7pm last night and it literally just sounded like kids, somebody, screaming, and then it was more shrill and I was like, 'that's definitely a woman screaming', and within 15 minutes, it was absolute chaos.

"We had armed police running down, screaming 'stay in your house'.... they shut us off and basically put us into lockdown."

The resident said multiple ambulances, helicopters and "at least 16 police cars" arrived at the scene quickly, with armed police going from house to house to question locals, request doorbell camera footage and tell them to stay indoors.

The woman said she was upset to know a man sought in connection with the triple murder is still at large, adding: "It's really, really stressful now to think that that happened in such a close vicinity and none of us were aware and none of us could help.”

Jade-Simone Bacon, headteacher of St Michael's CofE Primary School in Brigadier Hill said pupils have not been allowed to go outside.

But parents will be able to pick up their children at "the normal time" at the end of the school day, Mrs Bacon confirmed.

"We've locked both buildings and just kept the children inside. So we've not had them on the field or the playground. It's not a lockdown as in under the desks or hidden or anything, it's just a lighter lockdown,” she said.

"We have just kept them within the building as though it were like a wet playday so we don't cause the children any distress and we keep everything as calm as possible."

Mrs Bacon said the police carried out a "reassurance visit" to the primary school on Wednesday.

"A very close-knit family and they used to love the street. With his job they probably could have found a more salubrious house but they'd had a lot of work done on their house over the years. Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit said: “This continues to be an incredibly difficult time for the victims’ family and we would ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with what has happened.

“This investigation is moving at pace and formal identification of the victims is yet to take place.

“The premature naming of potential victims has caused great upset to the family when they should’ve been given the space to come to terms with their sudden loss.”

She added: “Following extensive inquiries, the suspect has been located and nobody else is being sought in connection with the investigation at this time.

The youngest victim of Tuesday’s killings, Louise Hunt, was an animal lover who ran a successful dog grooming business.

Heartbroken clients of Groom and Glow - which Louise launched in 2020, aged 21 - have been sharing their grief on Facebook.

“There are no words to describe what’s happened,” wrote Meg James. She described Louise as “a beautiful girl inside and out” who “always showed kindness and love.

“Our dog TedBoy adored you and so did every pup/dog that came to your salon,” she wrote.

Glyn Nicholas, 77, who lives on the same road as the family, said Groom and Glow “was a thriving business”. “We all took our dogs there to be groomed,” he added.

Vina Bharadia said the news of Louise’s death was “hard to bear”. “You were an absolute angel and our little Dash adored you,” they wrote. “RIP you beautiful girl with your mum and sister. Thoughts and prayers are with your dad”.

Anna-Marie Noonan wrote: “I was devastated when I realised it was you. You were always so kind and patient with my Scrappy and we both loved you for it.”

In her final post on X, last Wednesday (July 3), 25-year-old victim Louise retweeted a message that said: “I admire women who leave” whether “you left after the 1st time or the 12th time”.

The post continued: “If ppl was calling you dumb for 11 years but in the 12th year you decided you was done...it takes ALOT of strength to break a tie. it takes ALOT of self love to choose yo self”.

Police remain outside London cemetery where suspect was found

Police officers are still positioned outside Lavender Hill Cemetery in Enfield this morning.

Officers stood outside the gates in Cedar Road and a cordon was in place along Cook’s Hole Road. Members of the public were not able to enter the cemetery.

Suspect Kyle Clifford, 26, was found injured there yesterday evening and was taken to hospital, where he remains.

Home Secretary urgently looking at whether crossbow laws need tightening

Yvette Cooper will “take a view in the near future” of whether tougher crossbow laws are needed in the wake of the killings, the security minister has said, as the Home Secretary urgently considers the change.

Dan Jarvis told Sky News this morning: “I know that the Home Secretary is looking at this literally as we speak. There was a call for evidence that was initiated a number of months ago. She will want to consider that evidence in the round.

“She’ll want to look clearly, very carefully at what happened yesterday – devastating events – and she will take a view in the near future.”

Newmarket Racecourse to hold minute's silence

Officers raided the property when they launched their manhunt. The house has remains sealed off with two officers guarding it, and police are still searching the property.

Suspect's north London neighbours 'in total shock'

Kyle Clifford's neighbours say they are in "total shock" at the events of the last couple of days, as they described his parents as “respectful, nice people”.

The 26-year-old suspect is understood to live with his parents in a house close to Enfield town centre.

A mother-of-three who lives on the same road told the Standard this morning: “There was absolutely nothing to suggest any problems.

"The parents are respectful, nice people. They do the garden and walk the dog. They’ve been here a couple of years and from the outside the son was normal, no problems. I’m in total shock.”

Another neighbour said: “We are gobsmacked. When the police raided the house were in total shock.

“It’s a nice suburban road here...I see them walking the dog and they tend the garden which is really pretty in the front. I didn’t see him, the guy accused, much but certainly no red flags had ever been raised.”

A local dog walker said: “I’ve chatted in passing to the mum. She seemed nice, she must be devastated.”

Police due to give update this morning

Victim's colleagues pay tribute to 'fantastic' beauty therapist

Colleagues of victim Hannah Hunt, 28, have paid tribute to the “fantastic therapist”.

In a post on Facebook, The Anti-Ageing Clinic based in Radlett, Hertfordshire, said it was with “deep regret and sadness” that they learned of the “horrific murder on Tuesday night of our skin therapist Hannah”.

“She was a fantastic therapist and clients loved her,” the tribute continued.

“We send our condolences and prayers to her Dad, sister and family.

“She was very much a part of our team. Please bear with us at this terrible time.”

Residents gather for vigil at local church

A vigil for the three women killed in the attack is being held at St James’ Church in Bushey this morning.

More than 50 people are said to be in attendance, many of them visibly upset as they arrived at the church.

On an altar inside, three candles burned beside a vase containing three large red roses, in tribute to the victims.

The rector who is hosting the vigil said the killings have brought the community together as “one big family”.

“Today is very much about supporting the community,” Father David Stevenson told the PA news agency earlier this morning.

“This tragedy] has actually strengthened the community and brought it together...We realise that we are just one big family.”

PlayStation 'among items examined by police' at suspect's home

Suspect's former employer have had no contact with him since last July

Kyle Clifford’s former employer has said they have had no further communication with him since he left the company in July last year.

Fire and security installation company Amthal, based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, said in a statement: “Kyle Clifford was employed from February 22, 2023 to July 20, 2023.

“Since he departed from Amthal in July 2023, we have had no further communication with Mr Clifford.”

'The kindest, sweetest person': Childhood friend pays tribute to mother killed in attack

A childhood friend of Carol Hunt, who was killed in the crossbow attack along with two of her daughters, has described her as a “beautiful person”.

Lea Holloway, 60, said she had known Mrs Hunt since she was 16.

“We grew up together and were pregnant at the same time,” she said following a vigil at St James’ Church in Bushey. This is the stuff nightmares are made of.

“I was there the night she met John (Hunt). It was in a nightclub in Hemel Hempstead. We went out together, went to birthdays and events.

“It’s very difficult. She was the nicest, kindest, sweetest person you could ever meet. A beautiful person.”

Friend of Carol Hunt says killings are 'the thing of nightmares'

Lea Holloway, a friend of victim Carol Hunt, has called the crossbow killings “the thing of nightmares” - and expressed deep sympathy for Mrs Hunt’s widower and surviving daughter.

Mrs Hunt and her husband, Radio 5 Live racing commentator John Hunt, are understood to have had three daughters together.

Two of them - 25-year-old Louise and 28-year-old Hannah - were killed in Tuesday’s attack, along with Mrs Hunt.

“They were a lovely family and (the daughters) were lovely girls,” said Ms Holloway, crying as she spoke following a vigil at St James’ Church in Bushey following

“They were making their way through life and their lives have been taken too soon. It’s the thing of nightmares.

“I feel for their eldest daughter and John (Hunt). I can’t imagine what it would be like.”

'It doesn't seem real' say close friends of mother killed in crossbow attack

Three close friends of Carol Hunt have said they are “together in grief” after she was killed in the crossbow attack.

Dionne Smith, 58, Abigail Phillips, 58 and Lea Holloway, 60, told a press gathering outside St James’ Church: “She was a lovely, lovely person. We can’t believe what happened.

“We were a four, and now there’s only three. It doesn’t seem real. We are together in grief.”

More tributes laid near family's home

A large array of flowers and tributes is amassing by the police cordon in Ashlyn Close, Bushey - the street where Carol, Louise and Hannah Hunt were killed on Tuesday night.

One message reads: “RIP three beautiful ladies. John, thinking of you and your family at this very sad and unfortunate time.”

One card bears a picture of a dog, along with a note addressed to Louise, 25, who ran her own dog grooming parlour.

“RIP Louise,” it reads. “Reggie says thank you for making him look so handsome. RIP Carol and Hannah.”

Another says: “Louise, Hannah and Carol. The strongest women to ever exist. You’ll always be remembered. I wish I could continue doing life with you Louise my beautiful girlie. I’ll miss you forever.”

Clifford in serious condition, say police, as they confirm crossbow found

Police have just released an update on the investigation.

They say Clifford remains “in a serious condition” in a London hospital and is so officers are yet to speak to him.

They also confirmed a crossbow has been recovered as part of their investigation.

Police say they have been looking at whether there was “any prior police contact between Hertfordshire Constabulary, Kyle Clifford and the victims”.

“We can confirm there had been no previous reports made to police,” said the force in this afternoon’s statement.

Clifford is understood to have been Louise’s ex-boyfriend. Their relationship is understood to have ended just last week.

Police piecing together circumstances of 'unprecedented' attack

Police renew appeal for witnesses

Hertfordshire Police has also renewed its appeal for witnesses, including anyone in Enfield who may have relevant information.

“I’d like to reiterate my sincere thanks to the members of public who contacted us yesterday and helped with our enquiries,” said Det Supt Rob Hall in a statement just now.

“We are still appealing for anyone with information in relation to the incident on Tuesday evening in Bushey and activity in Enfield yesterday that could assist us to please contact police directly.

“We have set up an information portal where people can submit any information, photos or video footage which they feel could assist us with our investigation.

“Local officers will remain in the area today so please do speak to them if you need to.”

What is the law around owning a crossbow?

Police have confirmed that a crossbow was used to kill Carol Hunt and her daughters, Hannah and Louise.

Home secretary Yvette Cooper is said to be “very carefully” examining a call for evidence on crossbow ownership that was launched by the Home Office earlier this year.

It is currently legal to buy a crossbow in the UK, with no need for a licence.

But it is illegal for an under-18 to own a crossbow, or for owners to rent or lend one to anyone else

It is also illegal to shoot one in a public space or any private place without permission.

Officers retrieve 'hard drives' from Enfield house

Search officers have retrieved what appeared to be two computer hard drives and two document bags from the house in Enfield.

Two officers had to carry one of the hard drives, while another three members of staff bundled the other evidence into a van.

MP calls for crossbow laws to be reviewed

Matthew Turmaine, the new Labour MP for Watford, has told the BBC that he has written to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to call for crossbow laws to be reviewed following the attacks.

"They're doing that as a matter of urgency," said Mr Turmaine, whose constituency includes Bushey.

"This will be the top of the inbox.

"I do think we will hear more about this very soon as this is an urgent priority."
