Busy Philipps received moral support from her Mean Girls mom predecessor Amy Poehler before taking on Mrs. George.

On Monday, the Girls5eva actress, 44, attended the New York City premiere of Mean Girls. In the film, Philipps takes on June George, the role originally played by the Saturday Night Live alum, 52, in the 2004 cult-classic teen comedy.

Flash forward to two decades later, Poehler had some words of guidance for her fellow comedian.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Philipps says the Baby Mama actress was “so happy” for her to get the role.

When asked if she talked to Poehler about the performance ahead of filming or if she decided to take her own approach, Philipps admitted the ladies “saw each other,” but she “couldn’t remember if we talked about it.”

“Which is so embarrassing, but I think that the understanding was just that it was gonna be totally different anyway, and we’re all friends,” she says, referring to Tina Fey, who wrote and starred in the original film as the beloved high school teacher Ms. Norbury.

Philipps also confesses, “I’m such a huge fan of the original, and her performance.” The actress adds that she dressed as Poehler’s Mean Girls character for Halloween “a few years ago.”

The Cougar Town talent walked the carpet with her 15-year-old daughter Birdie as her date. The pair posed for pictures on the red carpet before taking their seats.

Philipps tells PEOPLE that she doesn’t think her children see her as a “cool mom,” because she doesn’t try to be friends with them.

“I think I’m cool, but my kids don’t think I’m cool. And I’m aware of that. I also think I’m very clear on the fact that I’m their mother and not their friend, so that definitely makes me uncool.”

Her daughter, Cricket, 10, whom she shares with ex Marc Silverstein, was not present for the star-studded event.

Megan Thee Stallion was also in attendance as she and Rapp, 23, collaborated on the single “Not My Fault” for the movie.

The music video is packed with Mean Girl references.

In the track, Megan, 28, dubs herself the "Black Regina George" as she emulates one of the character's most memorable looks from the film — a white tank top with two large holes revealing a purple bra.

The musical remake arrives in theaters on Jan. 12.
