Call the Midwife has almost finished filming season 13, ahead of the show's return this Christmas.

Since season 12 aired in February this year, fans of the period drama have been long-awaiting its return. And now, posting a behind-the-scenes photo to its Instagram page, the long-running BBC series confirmed that the residents of Nonnatus House would be back on our screens very soon.

"Pssst! Heard the news? It's the last week of filming on Call the Midwife Series 13!!" the caption read. "We snatched this gorgeous pic of the Turner children in their late-sixties finery to mark the very last week of this year's filming!

"We love seeing Alice (Angela) sharing a secret joke with April (May) while a curious Ned (Teddy) looks on! The Turner children are actually SUCH good friends on set, and always look out for each other, much to the pride of their fake parents Stephen McGann and Laura Main! It was their last day on set, so there was much fun, and many hugs xxx."

The caption continued: "They were taking part in a rather lovely sequence for episode 8....but of course you'll have to wait to find out what that is. Next stop..... end of filming!!!!"

Alongside the new picture, the post gave a promising update on the upcoming series, confirming that Call the Midwife's 2023 Christmas Special will be airing over the festive period, while and series 13 will hit our screens in 2024.

This news comes after the show teased an eventful storyline for fan-favourite character Fred Buckle. In a recent Instagram post, Call the Midwife revealed that Poplar's resident handyman would be involved in a fireworks display story.

"Call the Midwife is no stranger to fireworks — and no Poplar light show would be complete without Fred Buckle risking life and limb in the service of his community," the caption read.

"In this way, our drama finds a strange kind of home in these dark days. And there's no brighter episode in our annual calendar than that which occurs at the gloomiest time of all... Christmas! Not long to go now..."

Call the Midwife will return to BBC One for its annual Christmas special later this year, with all 12 seasons now available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Season 13 returns in 2024.
