The Harry Potter star appeared on the Today show to discuss the death of her co-star Robbie Coltrane after new chancellor Jeremy Hunt had been interviewed in the previous segment.
After coming on air, Margolyes revealed what she said to Hunt when she met him in the hallway at the BBC's studios: "The thing is, when I saw him there, I just said, 'You’ve got a hell of a job, the best of luck.'

"Of course what I wanted to say was, 'F**k you, you b*****d!' But you can’t say that."
Broadcaster Vorderman reacted to the viral moment on social media, writing on Twitter: "This is genius….the bit that gets me most of all, having said “F you…you b*****D” live on air is…..”But you can’t say that”…. genius……. like the cutest puppy wagging its tail right after destroying a cushion. God we love you @MMargolyes."

Justin Webb, co-host of Today, had to apologise for the language used by Margolyes: "When I watched the Rugby on BT Sport they always apologised when you hear words that you possibly shouldn’t have heard, as they put it on BT Sport, in the scrum.
"Well, we apologise to you if you heard a word that you shouldn’t have heard, earlier on. The rest of Miriam Margolyes’ interview was wonderful though."
It's not the first time, Margolyes has said something controversial on air. When appearing on The Last Leg in 2020, she said she “had difficulty not wanting Boris Johnson to die” when he caught Covid-19.
Hunt is the UK's fourth chancellor of 2022, replacing Kwasi Kwarteng, who held the post for only 38 days.
The stint made him the second shortest serving post-war chancellor after Iain Macleod who died in office.
