Casualty has come out on top at the 2023 Royal Television Society Programme Awards, beating EastEnders and Hollyoaks to win the award for Best Soap and Continuing Drama.

"A new perspective from a long-established show," the judges said in a statement confirming the medical drama's success on Twitter following last night's (March 28) ceremony.

"It was created as a love letter to the NHS, and it is still that early 40 years later, and the power of those stories that we keep telling are based and inspired by the real life of doctors and nurses," the Casualty cast and crew told the RTS after the announcement.

The win is the third in recent years for the soap, having won in both 2020 and 2021. This year, they regained the award from the 2022 winner Hollyoaks.

Over the past year, Casualty has seen multiple big storylines — including its first-ever improvised episode that depicted the stressful real-life situations paramedics face, as well as an exit storyline for fan-favourite character Ethan Hardy.

There's still plenty more to come on Casualty, with recent episodes seeing departures for long-running characters Robyn Miller and Jacob Masters. Upcoming episodes will also see Holby City's Donna Jackson return and EastEnders' Nigel Harman join the cast.

Elsewhere at the 2023 RTS Programme Awards, other winners in non-soap categories included awards for The Traitors (Entertainment), Gogglebox (Formatted Popular Factual) and Derry Girls (Scripted Comedy). See the full list of nominees here.

Left out of this year's awards were ITV soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale, as the RTS have only three nominations per category.

"It is incredibly important to champion the outstanding content being made in our industry from both established and up-and-coming talent," RTS Chair Kenton Allen said in a statement confirming the list of nominees.

"The nominees announced today are a reflection of the remarkable strength of our UK creatives."

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
