Stepping back into the world of Beetlejuice after 35 years was “scary and fun,” Catherine O’Hara tells PEOPLE.

The actress, 69, who costars in the new action-comedy Argylle, filmed the highly anticipated sequel Beetlejuice 2 last year, and reunited with costars including Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder as well as director Tim Burton. New cast members include Monica Bellucci and Jenna Ortega.

“Winona, God bless her, looks the same. She looks beautiful, beautiful skin,” O’Hara says of her on-screen stepdaughter. “I've been needing Tim to do some digital youth-anizing on me.”

As for the cast newbies? “Jenna Ortega's great. Love her. What a cool young woman. Wow,” says O’Hara.

Details of the sequel are tightly under wraps, but PEOPLE previously reported Ortega plays the daughter of Ryder's character and Belucci plays the wife of Beetlejuice.

O’Hara says she’s cautious about giving out any more details. “I don’t want to blow it for anyone,” she says. “I don’t want to spoil the fun for anyone.”

In the original film, O’Hara played eccentric Delia Deetz, who moved into a charming New England home with her husband Charles (Jeffrey Jones) and his sullen daughter Lydia (Ryder).

The ghosts of the previous owners Barbara and Adam (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) wanted the Deetzes out of the house and tried to scare them away. When their efforts failed, they summoned the mischievous and devious demon Beetlejuice (Keaton) to assist them.

“It was really fun. It was really fun,” O’Hara says of filming the first movie. “And doing this last Beetlejuice was really fun too. I know [Burton] really wanted to get that feeling back on a set, and he got it.”

They were even able to film at the same location in Vermont, where the Deetzes’ house stood, according to O’Hara: “The exact same hill. I can't believe it exists still. It hasn't been developed, overdeveloped.”

O’Hara hasn’t kept in regular touch with her costars for some time. She says actor Glenn Shadix, who played Delia’s friend Otho in the first film, was the “social convener" before he died in 2010.

“He really was the director of the cast. He kept us together for years afterward, after we finished shooting,” she says.

Other than that, "I would see Michael Keaton once in a while at a party or something, and we'd text. After I saw him do some great work. I would text him, congratulations, whatever. And I love him; he's just so funny. He's a great improviser too. Any bit, he's just nonstop funny in such a relaxed, great natural way,” O’Hara adds.

As for Ryder, O'Hara would run into her “once in a blue moon at something. Always sweet."

Reprising the role of Delia Deetz came easier to O’Hara after playing the self-involved former soap actress Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek for six seasons.

“It's the same person, isn't it? But I don't think Delia has the vocabulary or the unwarranted confidence,” she says.

“They're definitely very similar characters in that they think they have talent, they believe they have talent, and if the world would only recognize it,” adds O’Hara.

Beetlejuice 2 is in theaters this September; Argylle is in theaters Friday, Feb. 2.
