Chace Crawford Was 'Blasé' About “Gossip Girl ”Audition After “Friday Night Lights ”Rejection: 'Devastated'

The actor wanted Scott Porter's 'Friday Night Lights' role "so bad," and it made him act pretty nonchalant in his audition for Nate Archibald on 'Gossip Girl'

Chace Crawford originally had his sights set on Dillon, Texas rather than Manhattan's Upper East Side.

The Gossip Girl actor, 38, was "devastated" after he wasn't cast in Friday Night Lights, he revealed on the June 12 episode of Call Her Daddy. But his career-launching role as Nate Archibald ended up coming out of that failure.

"I actually auditioned for [Friday Night Lights] and didn't get the quarterback and I was devastated at the time," Crawford told host Alex Cooper. "I was like, 'Oh my God, I want that so bad.' But it didn't work out."

When the audition for Gossip Girl rolled around, the sting of rejection was still fresh.

"I was a little like, eye roll, like this is kind of – not beneath me, but I wanted Friday Night Lights. So I'm like – I kinda went in there with a very kind of blasé [attitude]," Crawford said, noting that his nonchalance "probably helped and worked in my favor, as those things kind of do."

Crawford has spoken previously about how disappointed he was not to be cast in the NBC drama, which premiered in 2006 and ran for five seasons.

In 2022, during an appearance on Jessica Szohr's podcast, XOXO, he talked about auditioning for the role of quarterback Jason Street, which ended up going to Scott Porter.

"I kind of knew in my head, 'This is gonna be the best thing this year, or possible, or maybe ever ... this could be the coolest thing ever.'"

Taylor Kitsch, who ended up leading the series as Tim Riggins, was a friend of Crawford's at the time and was actually crashing on his couch to audition for the show, too, which only exacerbated how badly Crawford wanted the role.

"Taylor got it, I was pretty bummed. I was extremely devastated," he said of Kitsch, 43, with whom he'd starred in The Covenant.

"You can't help but envision your future. It's like a relationship. It's like a girl that doesn't want you. You're like, 'I can see us having kids,' and you can't help but think about it at nighttime ... and then they break your heart. You think you did a great read, [director] Peter Berg loves you, and then he shatters your whole world."
