Chance the Rapper announces divorce from Kirsten Corley after 5 years of marriage
“We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together," the musician wrote.
Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley are going separate ways.
The musician, 30, and his former partner, 30, who began an on-again off-again relationship in 2013 before marrying in 2019, announced their plans to split on Wednesday via Instagram. “After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways,” reads a statement posted to Chance’s Instagram stories. “We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.”
The statement continues to explain that the couple still plan to co-parent their two children. “God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together,” it reads. “We kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate this transition. Thank you.”
Reps for Chance the Rapper declined to comment.
Chance, whose full name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, said that he first met Corley when he was 9 years old. They started dating in 2013 and welcomed their first daughter in 2015, then broke up in 2016. Corley filed paperwork to be named the “sole caretaker” of the couple’s daughter following that split, but withdrew her filing in early 2017 once she reconciled with Bennett. They then got engaged in 2018 and married in 2019, welcoming their second daughter later that same year.
Chance’s relationship with Corley is a major recurring thematic throughline in his music — his 2019 album The Big Day was a concept album about the couple’s wedding day. His song “Finish Line/Drown” from 2016’s Coloring Book features lyrics like “Me and my girl plan to stay to the end/Hope there never come a day where we be better as friends/We in a marathon we could build a marriage on,” and “Blessings” from the same mixtape also discusses their relationship: “I know the difference in blessings and worldly possessions/Like my ex-girl getting pregnant and her becoming my everything.”
Chance has recently teased a new album, Star Line Gallery, on social media, and although no release date has been officially announced, he did say that the project would arrive sometime in spring 2024. Additionally, the rapper is currently coaching his second season on The Voice on NBC.
