Chelsea injury update: Christopher Nkunku, Reece James and Romeo Lavia latest news and return dates

Chelsea have booked their spot in next month’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

While Mauricio Pochettino’s first season in charge has proven difficult at times, the Blues do at least have the chance to lift silverware during it.

Given the rather chaotic nature of their summer, doing so would be an achievement.

The sheer number of injuries Pochettino has had to deal with this season has not helped matters, either.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Chelsea injuries.

Christopher Nkunku

Big summer signing Christopher Nkunku has endured an injury-hit first few months at Stamford Bridge. The Frenchman underwent knee surgery in the summer before a hip problem curtailed his recent run in the first-team.

Pochettino, however, is confident that the forward has not suffered a serious injury.

"It is a shame but he is still recovering from some suffering in his hip and we hope he can be back as soon as possible with the team - it's not a big issue,” said the Blues boss before the win over Middlesbrough.

Potential return date: January 2024

Reece James

Captain Reece James is another who has seen his campaign blighted by injuries.

The England defender underwent hamstring surgery back in December and his return date remains unclear.

Romeo Lavia

Romeo Lavia has barely featured since joining from Southampton, injuring his thigh on his debut over Christmas after finally putting ankle issues behind him.

Like James, his return date is unclear.

Potential return date: Unknown

Robert Sanchez

Summer arrival Robert Sanchez started the season as Chelsea’s No.1 goalkeeper but suffered a knee injury during the loss to Everton in December.

The Spaniard has avoided the need for surgery and will step up his recovery soon.

Potential return date: February 2024

Malo Gusto

Malo Gusto missed the win over Middlesbrough after suffering an injury during the victory against Fulham but the issue is not thought to be serious at this stage.

Lesley Ugochukwu

Young midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu suffered a hamstring injury during the Christmas Eve defeat at Wolves and is not expected back until late February.

Potential return date: Late February 2024

Marc Cucurella

In December, Marc Cucurella underwent surgery on an ankle problem and was expected to face up to three months out of action.

Potential return date: March/April 2024

Wesley Fofana

Wesley Fofana seems unlikely to play again this season after suffering a serious knee injury earlier this season.

Potential return date: Summer 2024
