Chelsea vs Liverpool LIVE!

New Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino saw the team he rebuilt in pre-season fight back to draw 1-1 at home to Liverpool in their Premier League opener as debutant defender Axel Disasi cancelled out Luis Diaz’s opener.

In a meeting of two of last season’s heavyweight flops, Diaz threatened to ruin Pochettino’s first competitive match in charge of the Blues when the Colombian stretched out a boot to turn in a defence-splitting pass by Mohamed Salah in the 18th minute as the visitors attacked with lightening speed. Liverpool thought they had doubled their lead just over 10 minutes later but Salah was judged to have been offside before he put the ball past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, one of four debutants in Chelsea’s starting lineup.

Chelsea weathered the storm and equalised in the 37th minute when Liverpool failed to clear a corner and France international Disasi - signed this month from AS Monaco - swept the ball in from close range after a looping Ben Chilwell header. Two minutes later, Chilwell rounded goalkeeper Alison Becker to put ball in the net but VAR ruled he was offside. Chelsea dominated possession after the break but failed to get a second goal. A deflected shot by substitute Darwin Nunez then almost won it for Liverpool in the dying moments.

Chelsea started with Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher and Carney Chukwuemeka in midfield as talks continue over a fee to secure Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

It was a tense week leading up to the match, as Liverpool hijacked Chelsea’s approach for Caicedo to agree a £111million fee on Friday.

Chelsea’s summer feels like it will be defined by whether they secure Caicedo or not. However, Liverpool looked more lacking in midfield as they opened their season.

Klopp ‘absolutely fine’ with Salah reaction

19:44 , Matt Verri

Jurgen Klopp insisted Mohamed Salah’s angry reaction to being substituted was “absolutely fine” in Liverpool’s draw with Chelsea.

The Egyptian and Diaz were replaced by Ben Doak and Harvey Elliott with just under 15 minutes remaining, Salah ripping off his wrist tape and throwing it to the floor as he stormed off the pitch without acknowledging Klopp. However, the Liverpool boss had no issue with the incident when asked after the match.

“I can understand because if Mo scored it would have been a new record for goals scored in the opening game but I didn’t think about that,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“We needed stability and we needed fresh legs. It was super intense for everybody.

“That’s all I can say about it, his reaction was absolutely okay. When I sub a player and he is jumping in to my arms at 1-1 and he is a striker who thinks he will score, I would be really surprised so that’s absolutely fine.”

Chelsea ratings

18:49 , Matt Verri

Levi Colwill - 5

Colwill was too often exposed in one-versus-one duels against Mohammed Salah but improved in the second half on his Chelsea debut.

Reece James - 8

Created huge chances for Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling and Chilwell in his first 90 minutes as club captain.

Enzo Fernandez - 8

Produced possibly his best display in a Chelsea shirt. The midfielder was tenacious, a goal threat and highly creative over the 90 minutes.

Alexis Mac Allister 7

Asked to play deep on his club debut and was exceptionally neat and tidy in possession. A major plus point for the Reds.

Dominik Szoboszlai 6

Weak clearing header led to the Disasi goal, a little quieter on debut than some fans would have liked.

Salah less than impressed...

18:34 , Matt Verri

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

18:30 , Matt Verri

And that’s full-time.

It ends level at Stamford Bridge, neither side able to find a winner in the second-half.

Chelsea the better side overall, particularly after the break. It’s a positive start to the Mauricio Pochettino era.

18:29 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Chelsea break, Mudryk is played in and he goes round Alisson... can’t catch up with the ball!

Plays it back across goal, Maatsen unable to turn it in. Chaotic finish to this match.

18:27 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Just wide! Not far away at all, Nunez trying his luck from distance and it spins past the far post. Sanchez was not confident at all. Liverpool corner.

Great goalkeeping, Sanchez off his line to claim.

18:25 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Mac Allister tripped by Gallagher, but earns a yellow card himself for trying to get the Chelsea man booked.

Liverpool can’t make anything of it though, terrible from Alexander-Arnold. The Reds want a penalty shortly after, Maatsen looks a bit guilty... offside flag up though.

Five minutes added on.

18:23 , Matt Verri

88 mins: It is a massive chance for Liverpool and they make a complete mess of it!

Sanchez with an awful pass out, Mac Allister pounces on it and looks to play Nunez in. Not the best of balls, even worse touch from Nunez and it bobbles through to Sanchez.

Not sure they’ll get a bigger opportunity than that.

18:20 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Szoboszlai has to shoot as the ball comes to him 20 yards out, goes for a cute pass though and the chance goes.

Liverpool look to break, Jackson brought down by Konate and it’s a yellow card for the Reds defender. Jackson booked too, for waving an imaginary card.

18:16 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Sterling and Chukwuemeka are off for Chelsea, Maatsen and Mudryk get their chance to impress.

Pochettino will still feel his side can win this, they’ve been on top for pretty much the entire second half.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

18:12 , Matt Verri

Reece James may have picked up some kind of injury as he looked in pain when he came off for Malo Gusto’s debut.

He didn’t go down the tunnel and sat on the bench so hopefully it is just precautionary.

18:12 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Well then. Salah off for Liverpool and he is furious about it, throwing his tape to the ground as he storms off. Doesn’t even look at Klopp.

Doak and Elliott on, Diaz the other player to make way.

18:09 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Gallagher clips a ball over the top, Jackson is space but that’s because he’s offside.

Concern for Chelsea, James is looking down and isn’t moving very well. Gusto getting ready to come on for the Blues.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

18:07 , Matt Verri

Nicolas Jackson has been a real thorn in Liverpool’s side.

They’re trying to play a high line against his electric pace. He was unlucky not to score on the break after outpacing Konate just now.

18:06 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Liverpool starting to get up the pitch a bit more, but it’s all very slow from them in attack.

And that’s very loose, Alexander-Arnold loses it and Jackson is away. Great pace, takes it himself and finds space for the shot. Alisson saves.

18:03 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Alexander-Arnold slowing things down with a throw-in... too slow. Yellow card for time wasting.

Liverpool have barely had a kick for ten minutes, Chelsea camped deep in their half.

18:00 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Chelsea corner, after more good work from Chilwell. The Blues are dominant, need to make this period count.

Terrible ball, Chelsea keep it alive though and it bounces around in the box. Silva lays it off for Colwill, his shot is blocked.

Klopp has seen enough and turns to his bench - Nunez and Jones on, Gakpo and Jota off.

17:56 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Chilwell wins a free-kick out wide, Liverpool on the ropes now. James and Chilwell standing over it, up come the centre-backs.

It’s James to take, has gone for goal from an almost impossible angle and it’s well over the bar. Not a great decision.

17:54 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Pace has just slowed down a bit, as Chelsea knock it around at the back and Liverpool sit off.

That is until it’s pinged out wide to Chilwell, but Alexander-Arnold does well to get his body in the way and clear the danger.

17:52 , Matt Verri

57 mins: So much space for both sides, fairly clear that both sides could do with a holding midfielder.

Then again, it’s a lot more fun now they don’t have one. Klopp and Pochettino will believe there are more goals in it for them.

17:49 , Matt Verri

54 mins: There was a VAR review amid all that, with the ball hitting Jackson’s arm. He gets away with it though, arms maybe just about enough by his side.

Chelsea meanwhile have their first attack of the half, Chilwell lashes an effort straight at Alisson. Should have done more.

17:47 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Chelsea hanging on at the start of this half, can’t get out. Silva turns the ball away for another corner.

Just wide! Inches away. Diaz won the header, it bounced off a Chelsea defender and trickled wide of the post.

17:43 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Liverpool straight on the attack, ball out to Diaz and he clips a cross into the box... Chelsea turn it behind for a corner. Alexander-Arnold to take.

To the near post, not a lot of pace on it and Chelsea can clear. Liverpool stay on the attack though, helped by Diaz’s acrobatics.

Comes to Van Dijk on the edge of the area, whips an effort towards the far corner - just over! Brilliant effort.

Back underway!

At half-time, you are left feeling that this is two talented but incomplete teams battling it out.

HT: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

17:24 , Matt Verri

Half-time at Stamford Bridge and it’s level.

Liverpool by far the better team in the early stages, Diaz giving them the lead and Salah very nearly doubling it as VAR saved Chelsea.

The Blues grew into the match though, equalising through Disasi and they were well on top in the final ten minutes or so.

17:22 , Matt Verri

45+6 mins: Fernandez with a smart turn, Mac Allister trips him up and Chelsea have a free-kick in a great position. Jota back on for Liverpool.

Good ball in, Colwill unable to do anything with it at the back post.

17:19 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: Jota down for Liverpool, looks to be in a fair bit of pain.

Colwill came flying in and clattered him, fair challenge though and the referee waved played on. Physios on to give Jota some treatment.

17:17 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Six minutes added on.

It’s Liverpool who want half-time now, they’re struggling to get on the ball and have lost the control they had.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

17:15 , Matt Verri

Reece James has been unstoppable going forward. He is totally dominating Andy Robertson.

17:14 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Liverpool all over the place at the back, Chelsea finishing this half so well.

James gets away from Robertson, low ball into the box and Jackson should really score. Fires the shot well over the bar.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

17:12 , Matt Verri

It’s great to hear the Stamford Bridge atmosphere bouncing back. It hasn’t been this loud for a league game since Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham last season.

Expect Ben Chilwell to be very advanced this season. He came close to having a goal and assist within 60 seconds but for the offside flag. He will fly forward whether Chelsea are in a back three or four.

NO GOAL!

17:11 , Matt Verri

Offside!

Chelsea denied a second goal, Chilwell was just about beyond Alexander-Arnold.

Everyone needs to catch their breath, chaotic last five minutes.

GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool | Ben Chilwell 39'

17:10 , Matt Verri

THEY’VE TURNED IT AROUND!

Wow. Where has this come from all of a sudden?

Liverpool falling apart at the back, Chilwell played in by Fernandez, knocks it round Alisson and passes the ball into an empty net.

VAR check...

GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool | Axel Disasi 37'

17:08 , Matt Verri

CHELSEA LEVEL IT UP!

Debut goal for Disasi! Corner is cleared out to the edge of the box, Chilwell nods it back in and Disasi is there on the stretch to turn the ball beyond Alisson.

17:07 , Matt Verri

36 mins: James has space on the right to put a ball into the box, not his best though and easily cleared by Konate.

Comes back to him, slides Sterling in and the forward somehow finds space to skip along the byline. Dinks the ball across the face of goal, Alexander-Arnold turns it over his own bar.

Liverpool that far away from a second goal...

17:06 , Matt Verri

17:03 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Bit of a clash between Jota and Fernandez, they square up and both get yellow cards. All very pointless.

Chelsea still struggling to get any sort of control in this match, they’re lucky to be only one-goal down.

NO GOAL!

17:01 , Matt Verri

Offside!

Salah is just about beyond the last defender, the goal is ruled out. Big let-off for Chelsea.

GOAL! Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool | Mohamed Salah 29'

17:00 , Matt Verri

TOO GOOD!

Liverpool double their lead and once again it is a glorious move. Alexander-Arnold with a stunning pass, Salah clean through on goal.

Takes his time, strolls into the box and lifts the finish over Sanchez. VAR checking...

16:57 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Chelsea frighteningly open as Liverpool break down the left, Diaz is away.

He squares it to Salah, free at the back post but his effort is blocked as the Chelsea defenders quickly get across. More goals in this for Liverpool.

16:55 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Good work from Jackson, as the ball is fired in to him. He bounces off two Liverpool players, too strong for Gakpo, and gets the shot away as Van Dijk comes across.

Drags it wide of the far post, but that was sharp from the Chelsea forward.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

16:53 , Matt Verri

Liverpool’s need for a midfielder is highlighted by Cody Gakpo dropping into midfield when Chelsea have possession.

16:52 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Chilwell down in the box, he wants a penalty.

Definitely not. Ball over the top, Konate comes across and puts a hand on Chilwell, who throws himself to the floor. Never getting a penalty for that.

16:51 , Matt Verri

20 mins: James it was who got caught out at the back post, didn’t track the run from Diaz at all.

Chelsea second best in the opening 20 minutes and they’ve now got to find a way to come from behind. Not the start to the season Pochettino had planned.

GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool | Luis Diaz 18'

16:49 , Matt Verri

LIVERPOOL TAKE THE LEAD!

Can’t say they don’t deserve it. Brilliant goal too, stunning pass from Salah to open Chelsea up and Diaz provides the finish as he slides in at the back post. Ruthless.

16:48 , Matt Verri

17 mins: James starting to get more involved, great ball into the box but Jackson can’t get there in front of Alisson.

At the other end, Gallagher is robbed of the ball and Salah is in down the right, terrible touch though and Chelsea can clear. Better control and Liverpool were in.

16:46 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Jota lunges in on Gallagher, late and that will be a free-kick.

Just before that Salah effort, Chelsea had their first chance as Fernandez made a run in behind and had a shot blocked by Konate. The visitors do look exposed in midfield at times, Mac Allister having to do a lot of work as the deepest player.

16:43 , Matt Verri

12 mins: OFF THE BAR!

Liverpool inches away from taking the lead. Gakpo too strong for Gallagher, probably should take the shot but squares it instead to Salah.

Not a great pass, Salah has to wait before finding space to curl a right-footed effort towards the top corner. Smacks back off the bar.

16:41 , Matt Verri

10 mins: More like it from Chelsea, Sterling and James combine well on the right and win a corner for the hosts.

Taken short, James eventually clips it in and the ball bobbles around in the box. Not hugely convincing, but Liverpool eventually clear. There will be chances for Chelsea when they get forward, this Liverpool defence is vulnerable.

16:39 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Chelsea finally getting a touch of the ball, need to settle into this match.

Silva pings a long ball out wide to Chilwell, who is pushing right up the pitch in the early stages. Liverpool win it back though, Szoboszlai brings it away down the right and wins a cheap free-kick.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

16:37 , Matt Verri

Chukwuemeka is playing very high, Sterling tucking in when out of possession.

It looks like a 4-4-2 without the ball for Chelsea.

16:37 , Matt Verri

6 mins: It’s all Liverpool. Jota should play Diaz in, but too much on the pass and the winger is forced wide.

The visitors stay on the attack though, Szoboszlai skipping past the challenges and into the box. Chops inside, Jota takes it off him and slices a shot wide.

16:35 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Very early yellow card for Chukwuemeka, and he can’t really have any complaints.

Bouncing ball, Konate heads it away and Chukwuemeka comes in with a very high boot. Catches Konate, he’s straight into the book. Not a great start.

16:33 , Matt Verri

2 mins: It’s Liverpool straight on the front foot, as you’d expect considering the lineup. Not a defensive midfielder to be seen.

Mac Allister whips a cross into the box, Jota gets across his man but flicks the header wide of the far post.

KICK-OFF!

16:31 , Matt Verri

Up and running in this blockbuster encounter!

Here we go!

16:25 , Matt Verri

Teams are out onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

It was a fairly miserable watch for Chelsea fans last season, not just in terms of the results but the performances too. Goals, and any attacking intent, a real problem. Pochettino must fix that.

Attacking intent should not be a problem with this Liverpool side - defensively there are questions though.

Pochettino on Kepa absence

16:20 , Matt Verri

Mauricio Pochettino has been speaking ahead of kick-off, confirming that Kepa has been left out due to his imminent move to Real Madrid.

“With Kepa, something has happened very quickly and it’s a situation that is correct [Real Madrid loan move],” the Chelsea boss said.

“He has permission to explore a different situation and we will see what happens over the next 24, 48 hours.”

Draw in early kick-off

16:15 , Matt Verri

Tottenham and Brentford have played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Lots to enjoy in that match to kick Super Sunday off - now we just need to hope the action at Stamford Bridge can match it.

Warm-ups coming to an end, kick-off just 15 minutes away.

Deadlock broken this time?

16:07 , Matt Verri

The last four matches between Chelsea and Liverpool have finished goalless.

Doesn’t bode well for excitement this afternoon, but with that lineup from Liverpool in particular it is hard to see how we don’t get goals.

Chelsea a mystery package

15:53 , Matt Verri

For all the positivity surrounding the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea remain an unknown quantity going into the new season.

The Blues have undergone more change than any other Premier League team this summer and it is difficult to know what to expect against Liverpool.

Five signings have arrived at Stamford Bridge, 13 players have left and five have returned from loans.

Chelsea have lost a lot of experience and replaced it with a lot of unproven young talent, so there is no guarantee they will immediately return to the Premier League elite. What is certain is Pochettino wants them to play with more intensity.

Jurgen Klopp is expecting a tough test for his Liverpool side this afternoon, believing Mauricio Pochettino will have a big impact on Chelsea both in this match and throughout hte season.

“It’s a really talented team, that’s what we have to prepare for,” Klopp said.

“It’s a home game for them, the first home game after a long break, if you want, after a disappointing season, that’s all clear. So they want to show up, definitely.

“New manager, Poch is a top manager, so they will show up. We have to be ready. We have to be absolutely ready. The football they played you can see it - Poch is there.”

Pochettino: Club working to replace Nkunku

15:09 , Matt Verri

Chelsea will be without Christopher Nkunku to start the season after the French forward needed surgery to fix a knee injury sustained on a bad pitch in the club’s final pre-season match in Chicago.

Mauricio Pochettino wants a replacement for the £52m forward signed from RB Leipzig, who is now expected to be out for around four months.

The Chelsea boss said: “We feel very sorry about him. He was doing well, he was very important player for us. I think the quality is there, one of the best offensive players that can play in different positions that always is a big issue for us.

“Now it’s about not to think too much about the injuries and to be positive about when he can be again with us and recover as soon as possible in a good way.

“We are working in the market also, we are going to miss one player like this. The club is working, trying to find a solution, maybe short term, medium and long term to add the right profile for the team to perform for now.”

Eventful week!

15:02 , Matt Verri

These two sides have spent much of the week doing battle off the pitch, ahead of this afternoon’s match.

Liverpool have had three bids rejected for Romeo Lavia already this summer, before Chelsea swooped in with a £55m offer and they are now expected to land the Southampton midfielder.

And then there’s the Moises Caicedo saga. He appeared to be on his way to Anfield, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Brighton... but Chelsea have not given up and are leading that race too. The Blues are set to get both players!

Man City and Arsenal have both made winning starts to the season, beating Burnley and Nottingham Forest respectively over the last couple of days.

Newcastle have made the biggest statement, dispatching Aston Villa 5-1 in a sensational display, while Brighton eased past Luton in an entertaining clash.

Brentford and Tottenham are currently in action, with the Bees 2-1 up in first-half stoppage time.

Kepa set for Real move

14:44 , Matt Verri

Real Madrid are close to sealing a season-long loan move for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

The 28-year-old is set to play at the Santiago Bernabeu this season after agreeing a temporary switch that does not include the option for a permanent transfer.

Kepa will replace former Chelsea ‘keeper Thibaut Courtois, who suffered a long-term knee injury in training last week, and has chosen Madrid over Bayern Munich.

Fellow Spain international Robert Sanchez will replace Kepa as Chelsea’s new No1 as the Blues look to add another goalkeeper to their squad for competition. Sanchez joined Chelsea last week in a £25million move from Brighton.

Perfect afternoon for it!

14:36 , Matt Verri

Standard Sport prediction

14:29 , Matt Verri

Liverpool’s defence has looked suspect over the summer and they remain a player or two short of a complete squad, while it’s up front where the Bluesd do not look convincing.

Both sides would probably take a point from this heavyweight opening weekend tussle.

A 1-1 draw.

Liverpool team news

14:23 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have almost a clean bill of health for today’s high-profile Premier League opener.

Jurgen Klopp’s midfield is currently light on defensive-minded players ahead of this afternoon’s game, with anchor man Stefan Bajcetic joining Thiago Alcantara is not yet being ready to return from injuries that ended their respective 2022-23 campaigns early.

Klopp has deployed new signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboslzai together in an attacking 4-2-3-1 lineup during pre-season, a set-up which would not come without risk against Chelsea.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been tested in the midfield role which he excelled in on England duty at the start of the summer, while Curtis Jones is another option following the summer exits of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Jones, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jota, Diaz

Chelsea team news

14:15 , Matt Verri

Chelsea must decide upon a replacement for Christopher Nkunku as they begin their Premier League campaign.

Nkunku has had surgery after damaging the meniscus in his knee during pre-season and is expected to be sidelined for approximately four months in another injury blow after missing last year’s World Cup with France.

Mykhailo Mudryk is well placed to start on the left wing with Carney Chukwuemeka and Nicolas Jackson playing in attack alongside Raheem Sterling.

Kepa Arrizabalaga was likely to continue as the No1 goalkeeper despite Chelsea signing Brighton’s Robert Sanchez as competition, though now seems to be heading to Real Madrid as a short-term replacement for the injured Thibaut Courtois.

Reece James is now club captain and will play on the right of a back four alongside Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill and Ben Chilwell. Enzo Fernandez is set to play in midfield alongside Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea predicted XI: Sanchez, James, Thiago Silva, Colwill, Chilwell, Fernandez, Gallagher, Sterling, Chukwuemeka, Jackson, Mudryk
