As fans eagerly await wedding bells in the near future, Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan is sharing new details about the moment Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) say "I do."

Early in season 11, Adam popped the question for the third time in a low-key proposal and the couple made the pledge to "make it forever." The pair were previously engaged in season 2, but it soon fell apart when it became clear Adam wasn't quite ready for marriage.

After hooking up over the years, Adam proposed for the second time when Kim got pregnant in season 7. She eventually turned him down and miscarried their baby. In season 10, Kim and their adoptive daughter Makayla moved into Adam's house.

“I’m very excited to get into it,” Sigan told TVLine of finally getting the pair down the aisle. “So few times on this show do you get these really happy moments. I think it’ll be fun [to write]."

She adds, "There’s definitely a possibility of, ‘Are we going to do the wedding next year? Are we going to do the planning? What are we going to see?’ So, I’m excited to figure out all of that.”

The showrunner also dished on the couple's proposal which she described as "so them."

“They’ve been through so much and they have grown so much that it was just this very honest, small, intimate moment between the two of them," she said, adding that she imagines their upcoming nuptials to be just as quaint.

When it comes to planning the ceremony, Sigan said that Makyala will likely want to be "a part of all those conversations."

“And [Adam] has this big family and all these friends…" she continued. "Is he going to want to do the whole thing? You could see them go either way. There’s probably a good middle ground there.”

In January 2023, Squerciati told PEOPLE why she believed the third time would be the charm for her and Flueger's characters.

"First of all, I think it's time," she explained. "We've toyed with the audience's emotions enough, and I feel like the proposal just shows you that it is going to work. They're just both adults. It's not schmaltzy. There's not a dozen roses. It's just like, 'This is right.' And I feel that that's right. That's who they are. They know they want to be with each other forever, and that's how they do it."
