Chicago PD star LaRoyce Hawkins has confirmed a delay to season 11 of the show as the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strike continues.

Speaking at an acting masterclass lecture at Louisiana State University, Hawkins, who stars as Officer Kevin Atwater on Chicago PD said that he is in support of SAG-AFTRA's strike action, but that it might delay filming for a short period.

"Naturally, after the writers strike, it's going to take the writers a while to start warming up their rooms again and starting to conceptualize stories again," Hawkins said. "So we might need like a three-week buffer."

While filming for the NBC show normally begins in July, Hawkins said he's confident that he'll be back to work within the next two months as negotiations come to an end.

"From my personal research, we have a big hill to climb before we can find an agreement," he said. "I'm faithful and optimistic that it will only be a couple more months, if that, that we're off."

During the masterclass, Hawkins, who has played Kevin since 2014, also opened up about what makes his character tick on the hit show.

"I think over time, I've been sitting with the character enough to really, part of my process is really writing like the character, reading like the character," Hawkins said.

"I've been blessed to be able to over-imagine everything this character goes through. I have a background in comedy and poetry, so I keep the character fresh by either writing jokes or poems as the character ... to give him something to live through and goals to achieve outside of the cases he has to solve and the lives he has to save."

Chicago PD airs on NBC in the US, and on Sky Witness in the UK.
