US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s arrival in Taiwan on Tuesday night (2 August) has triggered strong condemnation from Beijing after she became the most senior American official to visit the island in 25 years.

Pelosi’s visit is a serious violation of the one-China policy adopted by the US, Beijing said in a statement issued shortly after she arrived in Taipei.

The Chinese government considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly threatened to annex the self-ruled island by force if necessary.

Prior to her arrival in Taipei, Pelosi had visited Singapore and Malaysia in the past two days as part of her visit to the region, which also includes Japan and South Korea. Last Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his American counterpart Joe Biden in a phone call against any interference in Taiwan affairs.

Here is the full statement by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on Pelosi's visit issued through Chinese state media:

“On August 2, US House of Representatives Speaker Pelosi visited Taiwan, China, despite China's firm opposition. This move seriously violates the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques, seriously violates the basic norms of international relations, seriously undermines the political foundation of China-US relations, and seriously damages China-US relations. It is a major political provocation to China. The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference firmly opposes and strongly condemns this.

There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole of China. The Taiwan issue is China's internal affairs. We firmly oppose all attempts and actions to split China, firmly oppose any external force interfering in China's peaceful reunification process, and will never allow any country to interfere in the Taiwan issue in any way. China must be unified, and it is bound to be unified. This is an irresistible historical trend. No one should underestimate the strong determination, firm will, and strong ability of the Chinese people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity!

The Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive core issue in Sino-US relations. The current US administration has repeatedly made commitments on the Taiwan issue to adhere to the one-China policy and not support "Taiwan independence", but some recent words and deeds of the US side run counter to this. We urge the US to abide by its commitments, stop any form of official exchanges with China's Taiwan region, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, not send any wrong signals to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and not go further and further down the dangerous road. Any wrong move that goes against the trend of history, tries to make a fuss about the Taiwan issue and endangers China's sovereignty and territorial integrity is doomed to fail and will suffer its own consequences.”
