Chloe Fineman's impression of Melania Trump got her a role in a Francis Ford Coppola film

How does one get cast in a Francis Ford Coppola movie? A Melania Trump impression might do the trick.

It worked for Chloe Fineman, who shared the unconventional way she was approached by Coppola to star in his upcoming sci-fi drama Megalopolis in Variety's latest Actors on Actors segment with Hannah Einbinder. "Wait. Queen, you’re in a Francis Ford Coppola movie? What the h?" Einbinder asked her fellow comedian.

"Sometimes people go to weird shows that you don’t expect," the Saturday Night Live star said. "It was 2019. I was [performing a sketch of] Ivana Trump and Melania FaceTiming. And I guess Francis was there, and he offered it from my weird Melania thing. You just never know who’s there."

Fineman — best known for her spot-on celebrity impressions of Jennifer Coolidge, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep, among others — stars alongside a sprawling ensemble cast led by Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito in Megalopolis, centered on an architect who wants to rebuild New York as a utopia following a disaster.

The transition from comedy to drama felt seamless, Fineman told Einbinder. "I weirdly feel more at home in the acting stuff, because I’m really late in life to comedy," she said. "I didn’t do my first comedy show until I was 27. I didn’t get SNL until 30. So for me, it was back to what I love."

Before she joined SNL in 2019, Fineman appeared in a handful of shows, including Mozart in the Jungle, Grown-ish, and Jane the Virgin. Other notable credits during her time on SNL include the shows Awkwafina is Nora from Queens and Dickinson, as well as the films Father of the Bride (2022), White Noise, and Babylon.

Megalopolis screened at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The worldwide release date has yet to be announced.

As for her impression of the former first lady that caught Coppola's attention, Fineman last parodied Trump with a Christmas-themed video that poked fun at her heavily-memed holiday decorations in the White House.
