Chris Evans has addressed the rumours that the original Avengers team could soon be getting back together.

Evans played Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his character joining Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in the superhero team.

Evans, Downey Jr and Johansson have since departed from their roles, but there has been speculation that the studio could look to reunite the iconic team following the box office underperformance of recent MCU entries.

Evans, however, has dampened the reports, telling The View (via JustJared): "You know, I always see those reports too, and it's news to me. Every couple of months, someone says that they're getting Downey, Hemsworth, and Johansson, and everyone's coming back!

"No one's spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I'm very protective. It's a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right," he added.

Evans wasn't the only person to recently comment on the rumours, with Marvel boss Kevin Feige also revealing that they hadn't yet discussed the prospect of a reunion between the heroes.

"We did not discuss that at the retreat, is the truth," he said. "We're doing a project with Scarlett. I love Robert, he's a part of the family, but in terms of returning we'll have to see."

Evans had previously spoken about the possibility of reprising his role as Captain America, saying he would be anxious about tarnishing the legacy of his portrayal.

"It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply," he said. "I think there's more Steve Rogers stories [to] tell, but at the same time, I'm very precious with it. I just don't want to mess up in any way."

Captain America: Brave New World has been officially confirmed. Meanwhile, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is streaming exclusively on Disney+.
