Christina Applegate reunites with “Anchorman” star Will Ferrell, reveals director yelled 'most bizarre s---' at them on set

Ferrell appeared on Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler's "MeSsy" podcast for a dive deep on the making of the film. "Call her a pirate hooker! Just bizarre stuff!"

Get ready to go inside your glass case of (nostalgic) emotion, because Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate just held a mini Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy cast reunion to reflect on the making of their modern comedy classic.

Ferrell joined Applegate and Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn Sigler on the most recent episode of their MeSsy podcast, on which they discussed filming Anchorman ahead of its critical and commercial success in 2004.

Sigler asked the costars if there were any scenes that made it into the Adam McKay-directed film that were "so heavily improvised that they almost were nothing that was on the script," and both Applegate and Ferrell cited several examples.

"A lot of that stuff, Christina and I going back and forth insulting each other, some of that was scripted, but so much of that was like, 'Just keep going!' Adam just wouldn't yell cut, so you just had to keep going," Ferrell remembered. "At first it feels like a burden, but then it unlocks a part of your brain to where now you're going into a whole other area that you didn't even know."

Applegate, who played Veronica Corningstone — the love interest and on-air colleague of Ferrell's Ron Burgundy, a San Diego news anchor — added that McKay's directing style sometimes made her nervous during production.

"When he wouldn't cut, my hands would get sweaty. I was like, 'No, I can't, please cut.' Sometimes he would just yell out lines. Remember he would yell out the most bizarre s---? I think, and I'm not taking this away from you, I think 'pirate hooker' was something Adam yelled out, but maybe it was something you guys had written down," Applegate said. "In the middle of the scene, he was just like, 'Call her a pirate hooker!' Just bizarre stuff!"

Ferrell recalled difficulty getting through some scenes because he was laughing so hard — particularly singling out a sequence in which Burgundy and Corningstone went on a date together.

"When we're on our date and we're in the car, looking out, and I'm describing that San Diego, discovered by the Germans, means 'a whale's vagina.' I had tears, I'm laughing so hard because I'm like this is the most absurd," Ferrell remembered. "How are we getting able to do this? I couldn't get through the scene."

Upon its release, Anchorman — also starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd — grossed just under $91 million at the box office, and spawned a 2013 sequel that brought back Ferrell, Applegate, Carell, and Rudd. That film added a further $174 million to the series' ticket-sale total, and many involved have since spoken about a potential third film, though nothing concrete has materialized to date.
