Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty have been eager for the arrival of season 3 after season 2 was all the rage in 2023. When asked if he was excited to head back to the hit Prime Video series at the New York premiere of Mean Girls on Monday, the 25-year-old actor — who plays Aaron Samuels in the new musical adaptation starring Reneé Rapp — told PEOPLE: “Yeah, for sure.”

“We were supposed to do it last year, so it's been a long time coming,” he added, seemingly referring to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which delayed the return to production.

Briney remained tight-lipped about what fans can expect from the show’s upcoming season, saying that he had “no clue” about any potential plot lines.

The third season — which was announced in August — will likely follow author Jenny Han’s third and final novel in the series, titled We'll Always Have Summer. The book takes place two years after the events of It’s Not Summer Without You as Belly (Lola Tung) once again finds herself questioning whether her heart lies with Conrad (Briney) or his brother Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Only in the third book, she finally makes a decision.

In June, the cast told PEOPLE that a third season would likely adhere to the third book as much as possible, despite season 2 straying from the books in various ways.

"I know Jenny is really just strong on staying as true to the books as possible and hitting the main points," Casalegno told PEOPLE.

"There's so many different ways you could go about it,” Tung added. “There's a blueprint of a book, which we've been lucky to have for two seasons now, just such a solid blueprint for us, and to have Jenny on set with us has been incredible."

Following the season 2 finale in August, Han kept things close to the vest about how everything would play out for Belly and the Fisher brothers — including how it would differ from the book's ending. However, she told PEOPLE that she originally “went into the show with an open mind” about how she could “explore new stories” while still honoring fans of the books.

“To me, the fun of the show is to watch it and be able to experience it as the story is meant to be told, which is where you're not sure of the ending,” she explained. “It's kind of the pain and the pleasure of storytelling is when I go to the movies, I don't want to know the ending. I really want to be surprised and I want to be on that journey, even though it does cause me anxiety as I'm watching.”

She continued: “So I know that it can make the fans crazy, but I'm really always trying to preserve their experience and for them to have the best possible experience as the audience.”
