A documentary about the 'Wagatha Christie' libel trial has been officially confirmed.

Channel 4 has announced the two-part documentary Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama, which will focus on the trial stemmed from a 2019 Instagram post in which Coleen Rooney alleged her private Instagram Stories had been regularly leaked to the press by Rebekah Vardy's account. Vardy, who firmly denies the claims, took Rooney to court for defamation, with judgement expected soon.

The 'Wagatha Christie' case – coined in reference to English detective novelist Agatha Christie – saw Rooney investigating after noticing the subject of her private Stories would often appear in the press.

Produced by Chalkboard for Channel 4, the upcoming documentary will use verbatim court transcripts as well as analysis from the media and on social media.

Actors will appear in the roles of Vardy and Rooney and their husbands, football manager and former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. Casting is yet to be announced.

"The #WagathaChristie phenomenon has become one of the most talked about moments in the history of social media. The court case that followed has captivated the entire nation but very few people actually got to see what happened inside the courtroom," Chalkboard creative director Tom Popay said in a statement. "We're excited to bring the trial to life in such a unique way and we're hoping we can get to the bottom of how this case fascinated and amazed so many."
