College-Bound High School Football Star with 4.1 GPA Is Killed at Party: 'Great Person'

A popular Texas high school football star with a promising future was killed Saturday night when gunshots rang out at a house party attended by 50 to 60 people, say authorities.

At about 11 p.m., on Saturday, deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called to a rental home on Fieldwick Lane that sits on a large piece of property in Humble, Texas, because of concerns about underage drinking, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff's office said the party was at an Airbnb rental property.

Shortly after, the sheriff’s office received another call about someone on the lawn, KRTK reports.

Deputies said partygoers told them a young man was in the backyard having a seizure, the HCSO said, KHOU reports. While they performed CPR on the male, they realized that he had been shot in the chest, KHOU reports.

The young man, later identified by the HCSO as North Shore High School senior Jarvon Coles, 18, was rushed to a local hospital where he died shortly after, say authorities.

“It is believed that one or two shooters, about one block away, intentionally shot in the direction of the house party, striking the male," HCSO Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The shooter and/or shooters fled the scene in a vehicle, Gonzalez said, asking residents to review their surveillance cameras for any leads.

Gonzalez said authorities believe the party was advertised on social media.

Coles was well-known in the community for his good grades and prowess on the football field.

In a Sept. 2023 feature story about him, he told KTRK, "School comes before athletics. Got to get the work done inside of class, then you can get out here and put the hard work in."

The community is mourning the loss of the talented teen who was about to begin a new, exciting chapter of his life, his grandfather and guardian told KHOU.

A two-time first-team all-district linebacker at North Shore High School, Coles had a 4.1 GPA and was accepted into 15 colleges, Braxton Coles told KHOU.

He said his grandson was planning to attend Lamar University and play football for the school.

He is survived by his grandparents and several brothers, KHOU reports.

"Parents, please keep your kids close. No matter how hard you try, you can't save them," Braxton Coles told KHOU.

Coles’ friend, DaMeko Williams, said he started crying as soon as he heard the news, KHOU reports.

Well-liked and personable, Coles always looked out for his friends, Williams told KHOU.

"He was, like I say, a great person on and off the field,” Williams said.

While the sheriff said the party took place at an Airbnb, but according to Airbnb, the party didn't take place during the timeframe of an actual reservation, Fox 26 Houston reports.
