Colman Domingo and a cast of formerly incarcerated actors soar in stirring trailer for “Sing Sing”

Domingo is coming for that second Oscar nomination.

This year's Oscars haven't even happened yet, and it would appear the 2025 Academy Awards are already off to the races.

Colman Domingo, nominated this year for Best Actor for his role in Rustin, stars in TIFF darling Sing Sing, the trailer for which just dropped today.

In the clip, below, Domingo gives an affecting turn as Divine G, a man imprisoned at the titular Sing Sing prison for a crime he didn't commit. He finds purpose in his days by participating in a theater group with other incarcerated men.

"It's been a program that was established to help people get more in touch with their feelings, and truly get some rehabilitation, and it's turned into something, I don't know... wonderful," he tells us in the trailer.

When a wary outsider decides to join the troupe, the inmates decide to stage their first original comedy in the film, which is described as a "stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art."

In addition to Domingo, Sing Sing also stars fellow Oscar nominee Paul Raci, Clarence Maclin, Sean San José, and a cast of real-life formerly incarcerated actors. Directed by Greg Kwedar with a screenplay by Kwedar and Clint Bentley, Sing Sing received glowing reviews out of its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where Domingo was honored with the TIFF Tribute Performer Award.

The film, which is produced by Bentley, Kwedar, and Monique Walton, will make its U.S. premiere at SXSW this month, and A24 will release the movie in July.
