“The Color Purple” cast leads “The View” audience in emotional standing ovation for Whoopi Goldberg

Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Fantasia Barrino, and Blitz Bazawule asked the studio crowd to honor Goldberg's work in the original 1985 film.

Nearly 40 years after she earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 1985's The Color Purple, Whoopi Goldberg welcomed the cast of the new Color Purple movie to The View — and the stars of the 2023 edition led the show's studio audience in an emotional standing ovation for her performance.

The 68-year-old EGOT-winning star brought Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and director Blitz Bazawule to the Hot Topics table on Wednesday, days before the release of the ensemble cast's big-screen reinterpretation of the classic Alice Walker novel, and the stars paid tribute to the path Goldberg paved for them in the previous big-screen adaptation.

"The Color Purple is sacred ground. You don't just show up to it with nothing to offer or nothing to contribute," Bazawule said of his inspiration to helm a reimagined take on the story. "It's been a brilliant, Pulitzer Prize–winning book, it's an incredible cinematic classic, and we owe you."

He then turned to the studio audience alongside Henson, who urged the crowd — and cohosts Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin — to stand and applaud Goldberg's work as the lead in the first film.

As everyone took their seats, Brooks told Goldberg, "We wouldn't be here without you."

Goldberg played Celie Harris-Johnson in director Steven Spielberg's film, which was nominated for Best Picture at the 1986 Oscars, the same ceremony where Goldberg competed for her first Best Actress Oscar nomination, before eventually winning Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1990 film Ghost.

Spielberg returned to produce the new version of the movie, with Oprah Winfrey (who portrayed Sofia in the 1985 version, a character Brooks is getting major buzz for on the current awards trail) rejoining the Color Purple family to produce the musical alongside him.

Both films follow a pair of young sisters, Celie and Nettie, who attempt to reconnect for years after being torn apart by the former's abusive husband in the early-1900s American south.

Bazawule's The Color Purple features a star-studded cast that also includes Colman Domingo, H.E.R., Ciara, Corey Hawkins, Jon Batiste, David Alan Grier, and Aunjanue Ellis.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
